Hyundai Bayon Set to be The Smallest and Most Affordable Midsize SUV in India
Hyundai Bayon expected price Rs 9.5 lakh Measuring 4.2 meters in length, the Bayon will slot between Venue and Creta
The Indian automotive market is all set to witness a wide range of new SUVs in the next 3-4 months. While sub-4-meter compact SUVs dominate high-volume sales, the midsize SUV segment represents the aspirational upgrade. However, the midsize SUV prices are steadily increasing past the Rs 11-20 lakh barrier. This has created a significant gap between the sub-compacts and midsize SUVs, and Hyundai is planning to fill this gap.
Hyundai has announced the Bayon crossover-SUV, which is designed to offer midsize SUV dimensions, road presence, and interior spatial packaging at an accessible price point. The Korean brand is set to position the Bayon as the smallest and most affordable midsize offering in India.
Dimension: Bridging the Venue-Creta Gap
The Hyundai Bayon is based on the latest generation, versatile K platform. Measuring around 4.2 metres in length, the SUV sits comfortably between the sub-4-meter Venue (3995 mm) and the Creta (4330 mm).
Despite its compact footprint, Hyundai will utilise the 2580 mm wheelbase to ensure rear legroom that directly rivals traditional midsize SUVs. Moreover, the SUV is expected to offer a cargo capacity of over 400-liters. The Hyundai Bayon will have a crossover stance and lower roofline make it significantly easier to manoeuvre and park in congested Indian metro cities compared to boxier and bigger midsize SUVs.
Aggressive Pricing Strategy
By localizing production and platform sharing, Hyundai is aiming to price the Bayon more aggressively than typical midsize SUVs. The Venue is available at a starting price of Rs 8 lakh, while the Hyundai Creta is tagged at Rs 11 lakh. We expect the new Hyundai Bayon to price somewhere around Rs 9.5 lakh and Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, the SUV undercuts most of its rivals including the Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and the Maruti Suzuki Victoris.
Hyundai Bayon Engine Options
The Hyundai Bayon will be powered by a tried & tested 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 114 bhp and 144 Nm of torque. This engine currently powers the Creta, Kia Seltos and Hyundai Verna, and known for providing linear power delivery, strong reliability and lower maintenance costs. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic.
The Bayon will be the first Hyundai model over 4 meters in length to feature a factory-fitted CNG kit. If reports are to be believed, the SUV could get an underbody CNG tank to offer a usable boot space.
Tech-Loaded Cabin
Hyundai Bayon will share high-end features with the Creta. It will get dual 10.25-inch integrated screens for instrument cluster and infotainment setup. Other key features include Hyundai Bluelink with over-the-air (OTA) updates, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging pad, automatic climate control and an electric sunroof. For safety and security, the SUV will have six airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill-Start Assist, and select LEVEL-2 ADAS.
