India Car Sales FY2026 – EV, CNG, Hybrid Cars Cross 13.4 Lakh Units

13.4 lakh green cars sold in FY2026 EV, CNG cars now at 30% share CNG leads, EVs steadily growing

India’s car market is witnessing a major shift towards alternative fuel vehicles.

Electric, CNG and hybrid cars together crossed 13.4 lakh units in FY2026, highlighting the growing demand for low running cost and eco-friendly mobility options.

Nearly 30% Market Share Achieved

Alternative fuel vehicles now make up close to 30% of total car sales in India.

In comparison, overall passenger vehicle sales stood at around 46.7 lakh units between April 2025 and March 2026, showing a healthy 13% growth over the previous financial year.

This means nearly one out of every three cars sold in India now runs on alternative energy.

What Is Driving This Shift?

The biggest factor behind this trend is cost savings.

Buyers are increasingly choosing CNG, hybrid and electric cars to reduce their fuel expenses. At the same time, improved technology and more product options are making these vehicles more practical.

Better charging infrastructure and rising consumer confidence in EVs are also supporting this growth.

Electric Cars Cross 2 Lakh Milestone

Electric vehicles reached a key milestone in FY2026.

More than 2 lakh EVs were sold in a single financial year for the first time.

However, EVs still account for only about 4% of total car sales, indicating that there is still room for expansion.

CNG Cars Continue to Lead

While EVs are gaining traction, CNG cars remain the most popular alternative fuel option.

Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the CNG segment with a wide range of models.

At the same time, Tata Motors is also strengthening its position, having sold around 1.7 lakh CNG cars in FY2026. The company is also a leader in India’s electric car market.

Automakers Focus on Clean Mobility

The growing demand for alternative fuel cars is encouraging automakers to invest more in clean technologies.

Companies like Mahindra and Tata Motors are expanding their EV portfolios and working on future-ready platforms.

This shift will not only benefit consumers but also help reduce India’s dependence on fuel imports.
