Tesla, the electric vehicle market leader, seems ready to enter India. The company has already started hiring employees in India, indicating that it will begin operations in the country soon. This follows after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk when he visited the U.S. recently. Job postings by Tesla on LinkedIn suggest that the brand is all set to foray into India, where demand for electric vehicles is mounting high. New incentives and declining luxury car import duties by the Indian government suggest that Tesla's foray into India is highly likely.
Tesla has posted 13 jobs in India, including Delhi and Mumbai jobs. The jobs include customer managers, delivery experts, and service technicians. This recruitment is a sign that Tesla is gearing up to start operations in India.
This recruitment is a precursor to a Prime Minister Modi and Elon Musk meeting. The meeting appeared to have impacted Tesla in acceding to the opening of the recruitment process in India, an indication that the company is launching an outlet in the Indian market.
Tesla has for a long time wanted to penetrate India but has been deterred by high import tariffs on foreign goods. The government of India has reduced import tariffs on high-end cars like EVs over $40,000 from 110% to 70%. Reducing the tariff will make it easy for Tesla to penetrate the Indian market as it has luxury EVs that it can export.
These policy reforms are significant as they make other global EV makers notice India. The Indian government is promoting the use of clean energy and offering incentives for using EVs, and thus India is a market worth entering for Tesla.
India's EV market is still small compared to China, but it is expanding. India has sold almost 100,000 units of EVs in 2024, whereas 11 million EVs were sold in China. India's market is humongous, at least, and with the government promoting cleaner fuel and EV subsidies, it just keeps expanding.
India is a good location where Tesla can widen its horizon. Indians are more interested in EVs, and India's government is also focusing on being green, so India is a valuable market for Tesla.
Tesla's hiring in India comes after Prime Minister Modi met with them, U.S. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The meeting involved negotiating trade relations because Modi had vowed to begin negotiating lower U.S.-India trade deficit. The meeting also involved negotiating rising U.S. arms sales to India, including the F-35 fighter jet.
All such discussions related to trade relation help to derive a sense regarding the interest of Tesla towards India. With improvement in the trade relation between America and India, Tesla is destined to benefit from improved relations.
While Tesla has already started hiring, it has not yet announced when it would start selling cars in India. If it will come to India, surely going to compete with BYD and VinFast. It is the view of experts that Tesla can first export vehicles to India and then think about the prospect of exporting a local factory. It would be based on demand as well as government incentives.
The Indian government also contacted other overseas automobile giants to establish local factories of producing EVs. In case the Indian market of Tesla is opened up, then Tesla can establish its own production centers in India in the future. It will lower the cost and make Tesla vehicles affordable in India.
