New-Gen BMW X5 with Hydrogen Engine - Key Details

The electric BMW iX5 is all set to launch internationally in 2026. New-Gen BMW X5 with Hydrogen Engine expected to join the line-up by 2028. The New-Gen BMW X5 with a Hydrogen Engine is likely to have a lithium-ion battery.

The electric BMW iX5 has been all set for its international launch in 2026 with the fifth-gen X5 upgraded petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrain. It is expected that a hydrogen-powered iX5 will be joining this line-up in 2028, using a powertrain co-developed with Toyota

Let's have a deep look at what this new-gen BMW X5 with a hydrogen engine could offer.

New-Gen BMW X5 with Hydrogen Engine: What's different?

The New-Gen BMW X5 is likely to have new fuel cell variants of existing models by the end of the decade. This version of the car would be a hydrogen or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) with an energy storage system. The engine of the car convert the stored hydrogen in tanks into electricity to drive the car.

Unlike EVs, which take a long time to charge, FCEVs are beneficial because they can be refueled at the station in 3-4 minutes, as per BMW. Also, hydrogen filling stations are cleaner than traditional petrol or diesel stations as they won't leave any odor after refueling.

Performance and Range

As per the iX5 concept, it is expected to deliver up to 406.56 bhp and an impressive acceleration from 0-100 kph under 6 seconds. The car's tank capacity is said to be 6 kg combined which will be offering 504 km when full.

Even the fuel cell alone is capable of producing enough to go for 178 bhp with the remains coming from a small, high-performance lithium-ion battery.

The infrastructure in India is still quite undeveloped for hydrogen-powered cars, so it is too early to expect a launch yet it is expected for 2028.
