BMW Unveils New X5 With EV, Hybrid And Hydrogen Power

BMW reveals the fifth-generation X5 globally. First-ever iX5 electric SUV offers up to 845km range. Hydrogen-powered X5 to join the lineup later.

BMW has revealed the fifth-generation X5, introducing a completely updated version of its luxury SUV. The new model gets a redesigned exterior, a modern cabin, more technology and the widest range of powertrains ever offered on an X5. Along with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, BMW has also introduced the first-ever all-electric iX5, while a hydrogen-powered model is set to join the lineup at a later stage.

Production of the new X5 will begin in August 2026, with global sales starting later this year.

New Design Inspired By Neue Klasse

The fifth-generation X5 adopts BMW's latest Neue Klasse design language while retaining its familiar SUV proportions.

At the front, it features a larger illuminated kidney grille, new 'double-X' LED lighting signature and redesigned adaptive LED headlamps. The side profile gets flush-fitting windows, integrated Winglet door handles, muscular wheel arches and new alloy wheels ranging from 21 to 23 inches.

The rear has also been updated with slimmer LED tail lamps, a revised bumper and a wider stance. Buyers will have a choice of 11 exterior colours, while M Sport and M Sport Pro packages continue to be available.

Bigger Screens And More Features Inside

The cabin has been completely redesigned with a cleaner dashboard and fewer physical buttons.

The biggest highlight is BMW's new Panoramic iDrive system, which works alongside a 17.9-inch touchscreen and a 3D head-up display. Buyers can also choose an optional passenger display.

Other key features include:

  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Sports seats
  • Ventilated and massage front seats
  • Four-zone climate control
  • Wireless phone charger
  • Soft-close doors
  • Bowers & Wilkins audio system with Dolby Atmos
  • Over-the-air software updates
  • Rear touchscreen for climate controls

Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid And EV Options

The new BMW X5 will be available with five different powertrain options. The X5 40 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 48V mild-hybrid technology, producing 400hp and 580Nm. The X5 40d xDrive diesel develops 313hp and 670Nm.

BMW has also introduced two plug-in hybrid models. The X5 50e xDrive produces 489hp and 700Nm, while the performance-focused X5 M60e xDrive delivers 612hp and 800Nm. Both PHEV versions offer a claimed electric-only range of up to 102km (WLTP).

First-Ever BMW iX5

For the first time, BMW has added a fully electric version to the X5 lineup. Called the iX5 60 xDrive, it comes with a 141kWh battery pack and an 800V electrical architecture. Its dual-motor setup develops 578hp and 805Nm of torque.

BMW claims the electric SUV can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 4.6 seconds and deliver a WLTP-certified driving range of up to 845km.

The battery supports 460kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10% to 80% charge in just 23 minutes. It also supports 22kW AC charging and bidirectional charging.

Hydrogen Version Confirmed

BMW has also confirmed that a production version of the iX5 Hydrogen will join the lineup at a later stage, making the X5 one of the few SUVs globally to offer petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains under a single nameplate.

Improved Safety And Ride Comfort

The new X5 comes equipped with Level 2 driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, highway assist, urban driving assist, automatic emergency braking and parking assist.

BMW has also made adaptive suspension standard across the range, while adaptive air suspension and Adaptive Chassis Control will be offered on selected variants.

Global Launch Timeline

BMW will begin production of the new X5 at its Spartanburg plant in the United States from August 2026.

The petrol and diesel models will go on sale globally from late November 2026, while the plug-in hybrid variants and the all-electric iX5 will arrive in early 2027.
