Kia Syros gets flex-fuel technology Gets a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine Comes with a 6-speed automatic gearbox
Kia has unveiled new details about its Syros Flex-Fuel vehicle in India, marking the carmaker’s first flex-fuel vehicle for the country. The Syros flex-fuel can run on pure petrol, pure ethanol and different petrol-ethanol blends. Kia has not yet confirmed when a production version will be launched in India.
The new flex-fuel Syros uses a modified version of the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine and gets a different automatic gearbox compared with the standard turbo-petrol model.
Kia Syros Gets 1.0-Litre Turbo Engine
The Syros flex-fuel is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. Kia has not revealed the power and torque figures for this version yet.
To make the engine work with different ethanol levels, Kia has made changes to the engine control unit (ECU), transmission control unit (TCU) and fuel system. This allows the vehicle to run on petrol, ethanol or different combinations of the two fuels.

Gets a 6-Speed Automatic Gearbox
The gearbox is another key difference between the regular Syros and the flex-fuel version.
The standard Syros with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine comes with a 7-speed DCT. The flex-fuel version, however, uses a 6-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
Kia has not confirmed if this exact gearbox setup will be used if the flex-fuel Syros eventually goes into production.
Can Run on Petrol and Ethanol
The biggest highlight of the Syros flex-fuel is its ability to run on different fuel mixes. Kia says the vehicle can use pure petrol, pure ethanol and varying ethanol-petrol blends.
This technology is expected to become more important in India as the country moves towards higher ethanol blends in petrol. Flex-fuel vehicles are designed to handle different ethanol levels without requiring the driver to choose a specific fuel type.
Design Remains Largely Unchanged
Despite the changes under the skin, the Syros flex-fuel looks largely similar to the standard SUV. It retains the same upright and boxy design, LED lighting elements, roof rails and alloy wheels.
The cabin also follows the standard Syros layout, including its multi-screen dashboard setup. The flex-fuel technology is mainly focused on changes to the engine, electronics and fuel system rather than the design.
Kia Syros Flex-Fuel Launch Plans
Kia has not confirmed a launch date or pricing for a production-spec Syros flex-fuel. The company is currently using the vehicle to showcase its flex-fuel technology and its plans for different powertrain options in India.
