Maruti Suzuki plans to adopt greener vehicle technology by expanding its CNG, hybrid and electric vehicle product portfolio. The OEM is all set to introduce its first electric offering in March 2025 – the Maruti e Vitara, which will be soon followed by the Fronx hybrid compact crossover. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx hybrid has been spotted testing for the first time in India.
The test mule looks exactly similar to the current model; however, it features ‘Hybrid’ badging on the tailgate. This confirms media reports suggesting Maruti Suzuki is developing its own strong hybrid powertrain.
The new Maruti Fronx hybrid will come with the brand’s new 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z-series engine that also does duty in the Swift hatchback. This motor will be paired to a battery and an electric motor. Maruti Suzuki’s new strong hybrid powertrain will work as a range extender where the gasoline motor will work as a generator and recharge the battery pack. The electric motor will transmit power to the wheels. It will be a series hybrid powertrain setup, and more economical than Toyota’s strong hybrid system that available with the Maruti Grand Vitara and Invicto.
Speculations suggest that the new Maruti Fronx hybrid will be capable to return a fuel efficiency of over 30 kmpl. Maruti Suzuki’s new strong hybrid powertrain will also be introduced on the brand’s mass-market vehicles including Swift, Dzire, Baleno and Brezza.
The existing version of the Fronx comes with the two engine options – a 1.2L, 4-cylinder K-Series naturally aspirated petrol and a 1.0L, 3-cylinder Boosterjet turbo petrol. While the naturally aspirated unit delivers a claimed power of 89bhp and 113Nm of torque, the turbocharged motor offers 99bhp with 148Nm. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT. The current Fronx returns ca claimed mileage of 21.79 kmpl (MT) and 22.89 kmpl (AMT).
The Marut Fronx hybrid will certainly be more fuel efficient, and expensive than its regular counterpart. It is expected to be priced nearly Rs 2 lakh – Rs 2.5 lakh premium than the existing version that costs Rs 7.51 lakh – Rs 13.04 lakh (ex-showroom).
