After months of speculation and expectation, Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has finally started road testing of its upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door. Spotted for the first time, the heavily camouflaged test mule was a right-hand drive vehicle that looks set for launch in the country soon. Expected to debut at the 2023 Auto Expo, the car is set for a market launch in the first half of 2023 itself. Earlier, we had spotted the 3-door version numerous times as it is manufactured in India for exports to foreign lands.
Going by the spy shots, the 5-door Jimny will be a stretched-out version of the regular model. Fitted with 5 doors, the upcoming SUV will sport a better and more practical cabin space, thanks to its longer wheelbase, making it more sensible for the Indian scenario. In terms of overall design, the test mule largely resembles the 3-door version with a boxy stance, round headlamps, tailgate-mounted spare wheel and more. We expect Maruti Suzuki to make minor adjustments to the design (with a new design for the alloy wheels) of the SUV to differentiative it from its smaller sibling. The test mule sported alloy wheels pained in red and shod with chunky tyres that will help its car with better off-road dynamics.
On the inside, we expect the Jimny 5-door model to sport a familiar dashboard layout to the 3-door model. However, some media reports suggests that it will get a new 9-inch infotainment unit with connected car technology.
Under the hood, the Jimny 5 door will most likely make use of the familiar 1.5-litre K15C petrol engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter AT gearbox option (similar to the option seen on all Nexa cars). In addition, we can also expect the car to come with another 1.4-litre Booster Jet turbo petrol unit used on the internationally model paired with Suzuki’s All-Grip Pro 4WD System.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny is expected to be sold through the Maruti Suzuki’s Nexa dealership chain and will rival the likes of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5-Door and Force Gurkha 5-Door upon its launch.
