Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 gets a 646hp twin-turbo V8 Rear-wheel drive coupe has a 310kph top speed Production limited to 30 units, all already sold
Mercedes-AMG has revealed the new CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a limited-run performance coupe based on the AMG CLE 53. The new model gets a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel drive and a heavily revised chassis.
The CLE 646 can accelerate from 0-100kph in just 3.9 seconds and has a claimed top speed of 310kph. Production will be limited to only 30 units worldwide, with Mercedes-AMG confirming that all examples have already been sold.
The biggest change over the AMG CLE 53 is the engine. The CLE 646 uses Mercedes-AMG's M177 Evo 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft. It produces 646hp and 850Nm, with peak torque available between 2,500rpm and 4,500rpm. Unlike the all-wheel-drive CLE 53, the CLE 646 sends its power only to the rear wheels. The V8 is paired with a nine-speed AMG Speedshift transmission and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

The CLE 646 is built for high performance. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0-100kph time of 3.9 seconds, while 0-200kph takes 11.4 seconds. The coupe has a claimed top speed of 310kph, making it one of the fastest and most focused versions of the CLE.
Mercedes-AMG has made extensive use of lightweight materials to reduce the weight of the car. Around 170kg has been removed compared with the donor car, bringing the CLE 646 down to 1,895kg.
Carbon-fibre components are used for several body panels, including the fenders, bonnet, roof, sills, rear apron and boot lid. The car also gets polycarbonate rear glass and a lighter 12-volt battery. The body is 60mm wider than the CLE 53 and features a large adjustable rear wing. It rides on 20-inch forged alloy wheels.
The CLE 646 gets steel coilover suspension developed with KW. Its four-way adjustable dampers allow the setup to be tuned for different driving conditions. Braking is handled by large carbon-ceramic discs measuring 420mm at the front and 360mm at the rear. The front uses six-piston calipers, while the rear gets single-piston calipers. The aerodynamic package includes an adjustable front diffuser and rear wing. Mercedes-AMG says the car can generate more than 250kg of downforce at top speed.
The interior has also been modified to make the CLE 646 more focused on performance. The rear seats have been removed along with some of the acoustic insulation. The coupe gets lightweight bucket seats, carbon-fibre door panels and a roll bar. The sound system and some driver-assistance features have also been simplified or removed as part of the weight-saving programme. An optional Performance Package adds six-point racing harnesses for those looking to use the car on a track.
The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is the second model in Mercedes-Benz's Mythos series, following the AMG PureSpeed. Only 30 examples will be produced worldwide, with each car being hand-built in Affalterbach using the AMG CLE 53 as its base. Mercedes-AMG says the entire production run was sold even before the car's world premiere. The company has not yet revealed the price of the limited-run coupe.
