Mahindra is developing range-extender technology for the XEV 9S. A petrol engine could act as a generator instead of driving the wheels. The XEV 9S could retain its EV-like driving experience with electric motors.
Mahindra is working on a new powertrain option for the XEV 9S electric SUV. The model could get range-extender technology that uses a petrol engine as a generator to charge its battery while the wheels continue to be driven by electric motors.
The XEV 9S was originally developed around Mahindra’s dedicated INGLO electric vehicle platform. However, the company is now exploring an Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) setup that could help address the limitations of a conventional battery-electric SUV on longer journeys.
Unlike a regular hybrid system, the petrol engine in the proposed XEV 9S range-extender setup would not directly power the wheels. Instead, a small-capacity petrol engine would work as a generator and produce electricity to charge the high-voltage battery.
The electric motors would continue to drive the SUV. This means the XEV 9S could retain the instant torque and smooth driving experience associated with a pure EV, while the petrol engine provides additional energy when required.

Since the wheels would continue to be powered by electric motors, the driving characteristics of the XEV 9S would remain closer to those of a conventional EV. The range-extender system could provide additional flexibility for longer trips without relying entirely on charging infrastructure. The petrol engine would essentially work in the background, generating electricity for the battery rather than acting as a conventional engine connected directly to the wheels.
Adding a petrol-powered generator to the XEV 9S will require changes to Mahindra’s INGLO platform. Engineers will need to make space for the generator engine, fuel tank, exhaust system and additional thermal management hardware. The company will also need to make structural and safety changes to accommodate these components while maintaining the platform’s EV-focused design.
The range-extender system could give the XEV 9S a different approach to long-distance electric driving. Instead of increasing battery size significantly, Mahindra could use the petrol generator to provide electricity when the battery needs additional charge.
However, Mahindra has not yet confirmed when this version of the XEV 9S will arrive or revealed its expected specifications. More details are likely to emerge as development progresses. This version keeps the range-extender technology and petrol-generator angle as the main news hook while avoiding overly technical language.
