Hyundai compact EV SUV coming to India by 2027. With boxy design, it will rival Tata Punch EV.
Hyundai Motor Company announced a new compact EV for the Indian market at its last year’s Investor Day. Slated to launch in 2027, the electric model will be designed, engineered and manufactured in the country. Codenamed HE1i, the new Hyundai compact EV SUV will be positioned against the Tata Punch EV. The brand’s Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu will serve as its production hub.
Rumour suggest that the new Made-in-India compact EV could be Hyundai’s version of the Kia EV2, which the brand’s smallest electric car. Speculations are also on rife that it could be based on the Hyundai Inster EV, which is currently sold in select global markets.
OEMs such as Tata, Mahindra and Renault are also planing compact and rugged SUVs for India, with launches expected by 2027. Hyundai has already confirmed a rugged SUV with ‘off-road capabilities’ at its 2025 Investor presentation. Following the emergence of spy images of the compact EV, reports flooding that this model could be the small muscular SUV planned for India.
That said, it’s important to note that there is no official information confirmation regarding the upcoming Hyundai compact EV SUV.
Spy images reaveal that the EV will feature an upright and boxy stance along with elements such as pronounced wheel arches, flush-fitting door handles, dual-tone diamond cut alloy wheels, sporty rear spoiler and LED taillamps with dotted pattern. Reports indicate that the EV could be based on the modular E-GMP (K), designed for urban driving.
Interior details remain unknown at this stage. However, the new Hyundai compact EV SUV is likely to come with a large touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrument cluster. The latest spy images also confirm the presence of a 360-degree camera integrated into the ORVMs.
Powertrain details are yet to be revealed. The new Hyundai compact electric SUV is expected to be offered with two battery pack options – Standard and Long-Range.
