Maruti Suzuki Ignis Out – New Sub-4m SUV Is Coming Soon

Maruti Suzuki ends Ignis production after six years New sub-4m SUV likely to rival Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter Y43 SUV could bring modern features and city-friendly performance

Maruti Suzuki has quietly ended production of the Ignis hatchback in India. While the car is still listed on the official website, new bookings are mostly unavailable, and only limited stock remains at select dealerships. This marks the end of the quirky small car that stood out in Maruti’s Nexa line-up.

The Hatchback That Made Its Mark

Launched in January 2017, the Ignis was known for its distinctive styling, compact footprint, and upright SUV-like stance. It drew inspiration from the global model while creating a niche for itself in the Indian city car segment. Despite its unique look and personality, sales gradually declined over the years, with pricing and limited mass-market appeal likely contributing factors.

Engines and Features

The Ignis was powered by a 1.2-litre K-series petrol engine delivering 83 hp and 113 Nm of torque, paired with either a five-speed manual or AMT gearbox. Initially, a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine producing 75 hp was also offered, but this was discontinued in 2018 due to weak demand and stricter emission rules.

In terms of features, the Ignis came with a 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, push-button start, steering-mounted controls, and LED projector headlamps in higher variants. Safety features included dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors. Later updates added a rear camera and improved structural compliance.

Facelifts and Declining Sales

Over its lifecycle, the Ignis received a facelift in 2020 and a minor safety update in 2019. Despite these efforts, sales had dropped significantly in recent months, prompting Maruti Suzuki to discontinue the model.

What’s Next – A New Sub-4m SUV

Maruti Suzuki is expected to replace the Ignis with a new sub-four-metre SUV, internally codenamed Y43. The upcoming model is likely to feature a more conventional SUV design while targeting popular rivals such as the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch. It may share the three-cylinder petrol engine from the Swift and Dzire, paired with modern features and improved safety equipment suitable for city buyers.

With this move, Maruti Suzuki aims to maintain its presence in the sub-4m SUV segment while offering a product that appeals to a wider range of buyers.
