Maruti Suzuki Plans to Launch 7 New SUVs Including a Tata Punch Rival

Maruti Suzuki is preparing a micro SUV to rival Tata Punch MSIL to adopt multi-powertrain strategy - NEVs, CNG, CBG and Flex-Fuel

In order to achieve an ambitious target of 7 million annual sales by 2031, Maruti Suzuki is aiming to launch 7 new SUVs in the Indian market. The company will continue to follow multi-powertrain strategy with specific focus on New Energy Vehicles, CNG, CBG and Flex-Fuel. The big news is that the company is preparing a sub-4 meter SUV, which will be positioned below the Fronx crossover.

The new micro SUV, codenamed Y43, will be positioned against the likes of the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter. It will come as a replacement for the recently discontinued Maruti Suzuki Ignis. The new micro SUV will come with multiple powertrain options, including a mild-hybrid petrol, CNG/CBG and electric powertrain options. A strong hybrid version based on the 1.2L Z-Series engine could also be introduced.

The new Maruti Suzuki micro SUV is expected to get a 1.2L, 3-cylinder petrol engine with a mild hybrid setup. The company could also introduce the 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options. With the Y43 micro SUV, the new SUV will appeal primarily to first-time car buyers looking for a compact SUV with a high ground clearance.

The new Maruti small SUV is likely to have an upright SUV styling, and will be loaded with high-end features. This model will be positioned alongside the Swift hatchback, which is one of the best-selling Marutis in India. It is expected to be based on the Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform that also underpins the Swift, Fronx, Baleno and Dzire.

Other Upcoming Maruti SUVs

After launching the Brezza facelift, Maruti Suzuki is reportedly preparing facelifts of the Fronx crossover and the Jimny off-roader. In fact, Fronx facelift has already been spotted testing with hybrid badge and ADAS equipment. It is reported that the company is developing a new 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara, which is expected to be launched sometime in early 2027.
