Suzuki Compact Cars to Get Strong Hybrid and Range Extender Hybrids with Plug-in Option
Suzuki Fronx and Baleno could receive series hybrid and range extender hybrid engine Called REEV light, the range extender tech will come with plug-in capability
Suzuki Motor Corporation has officially confirmed series hybrid and range extenders with plug-in capability for its compact cars. We informed you earlier that Maruti Suzuki is preparing an all-new series hybrid powertrain for its sub-4 meter cars, and the Fronx will be the first model to receive this tech.
The new Suzuki range extender tech with plug-in capability is called "REEV Light", which will use an electric motor to drive the wheels and an engine to generate electricity. The Japanese brand is also planning to add a charging connection and a right sized battery to create a light range extender.
Suzuki said, "it will become a “REEV Light” that does not carry an oversized battery yet lets you drive without worrying about the remaining charge."
It is expected that the Suzuki Fronx and Baleno could be the first products to receive the new hybrid solutions. In both powertrains, the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, Z12E engine would serve as a generator. These models will also receive Suzuki's Series Hybrid engine, which will use 1.2L engine as generator and an electric motor to drive the wheels.
Suzuki is aiming to develop both hybrid powertrains together, sharing core platforms and basic designs. "Rather than developing these individually, we plan them together on a common foundation of core platforms and basic designs, and develop them as a family," Suzuki stated.
The company opted for a series hybrid powertrain, which will be cheaper to develop than Series-Parallel hybrid technology offered with Grand Vitara, Victoris and Invicto.
Suzuki said, "For mini vehicles we adopt a new hybrid that achieves fuel economy, driving performance, and cost at a high level, reducing CO2 by 15% versus an ICE vehicle."
