Maruti Suzuki is working on a new hybrid powertrain that could make the Fronx one of the most fuel-efficient compact SUVs in India. The upcoming system is expected to use a series-hybrid setup, with the petrol engine mainly working as a generator while an electric motor drives the wheels.
With fuel prices remaining a concern for car owners, hybrid technology is gaining more attention in the mass-market car segment. Maruti Suzuki's new system could offer a more affordable alternative to conventional strong hybrids while delivering high fuel efficiency.
Maruti Fronx Hybrid Could Deliver 35+ kmpl
The upcoming Maruti Suzuki Fronx Hybrid is expected to use the company's 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine. Instead of directly driving the wheels, the engine will work as a generator to charge the battery pack. An electric motor will then drive the front wheels. This series-hybrid setup is also known as a range-extender system. Maruti Suzuki is reportedly targeting fuel efficiency of more than 35kmpl with this technology. The actual mileage will depend on the final production setup and driving conditions.
