The long-awaited Tata Nexon CNG will finally go on sale in the country before the end of this financial year, most probably during the festive season. For people not in the know, the Nexon CNG was showcased in the concept avatar at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Show. However, the concept was close to production form.
The Nexon CNG will be the country's first CNG car with a turbocharged petrol engine. It will be equipped with a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine along with Tata's twin CNG cylinder technology. The twin-cylinder setup is also available in the Tiago and the Tigor CNG. In fact, Hyundai is also readying the similar twin-CNG cylinder tech for its CNG cars.
Tata Motors has not revealed the power and torque figures, and fuel efficiency of the Nexon CNG. We expect the new model to witness a significant drop in power and torque outputs. However, it will still remain more powerful than the Maruti Brezza CNG or the bigger Grand Vitara/Hyryder CNG. A 6-speed manual gearbox is likely to come as standard. Similar to the Tiago CNG, the Tata Nexon CNG could also get the AMT option.
Tata's new twin-cylinder CNG tech is well received by Indian buyers, evident from its increasing sales numbers. The two CNG cylinder tanks are positioned under the boot floor, ensuring no damage to luggage space. The spare wheel moves under the car to increase its practicality.
The Tata Nexon will be the only car in its segment to offer multiple engine options including petrol, diesel, electric and the CNG. The CNG version design will be similar to the conventional petrol & diesel Nexon. The SUV has a single ECU for a quick shift between CNG to petrol mode. In fact, the SUV will directly start in CNG mode and has an auto switch between fuels function.
