Tata Nano EV Comeback Gets a New Hint

Tata Nano could make a comeback in the future, and this time it could return as an electric car. While Tata Motors has not confirmed plans to revive the iconic hatchback, a recent comment from the company’s India Design Head Ajay Jain has once again raised hopes of a Nano EV.

During an interview with ABP Auto Live, Jain was asked if the Nano could return. He initially responded with “Try Karenge” before explaining why the Nano remains special to Tata Motors.

He said that the Nano was an incredibly innovative car that put India on the map. Jain also added that it would be a pleasure to see the Tata Nano on the map again, “maybe in an electric avatar” that could be seen around the world.

These comments do not confirm that Tata Motors is developing a new Nano. However, they show that the company is open to the idea of bringing back the nameplate in some form.

Why a Nano EV Makes Sense Today

The original Nano was launched in 2009 with the aim of making four-wheeler ownership more affordable. However, its positioning as the world's cheapest car became a major challenge. Many Indian buyers preferred to spend more on larger hatchbacks, while the Nano struggled to move away from its low-cost image.

The market has changed significantly since then. Electric cars are now becoming more common, while compact city-focused vehicles have also found greater acceptance.

This could give a modern Nano a better chance than the original model. Instead of being positioned simply as the cheapest car, a new Nano could be developed as a small, affordable electric city car.

Tata Could Position It Below the Tiago EV

Tata Motors already has a strong presence in India's electric car market. Its EV range currently includes models such as the Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Harrier EV and Sierra EV.

However, there is still room for a more affordable electric car below the Tiago EV. A Nano EV could target customers who currently use two-wheelers but want to move to a car. It could also appeal to families looking for a small second car mainly for city driving.

A compact electric car with low running costs could therefore fit well into Tata Motors' current EV strategy.

People Still Want the Nano Back

The Nano continues to attract a lot of attention online even years after production ended. AI-generated images showing a modern Nano often go viral on social media, with many people hoping that Tata Motors will actually bring it back.

Ajay Jain also spoke about these AI-generated concepts and said they reflect people's emotions and their expectations from Tata Motors. The continued interest shows that the Nano name still has strong recall among Indian car enthusiasts. Even when some viral images are not based on real Tata products, they continue to generate huge interest.

Tata Had Already Tested a Nano EV

Interestingly, Tata Motors had previously explored an electric version of the Nano. The company worked with Coimbatore-based Jayem Automotives to develop the Jayem Neo, an electric version of the Nano aimed at fleet customers. It retained the basic Nano design but replaced its petrol engine with an electric powertrain.

The Jayem Neo used a 17kWh battery pack and had a claimed range of around 130km. This showed that the small-car platform could be adapted for electric power.

What Could a New Nano EV Offer?

A modern Nano EV would need to be very different from the original car. Safety standards, customer expectations and electric car technology have all improved significantly. Tata could use its current EV technology to give a new Nano a range of around 200km or more, along with better performance and improved safety.

The car could retain a very small footprint, making it easy to drive and park in crowded cities. At the same time, a more modern cabin with features expected by today's customers would be important.

Most importantly, Tata would need to position the car differently from the original Nano. Rather than focusing only on affordability, the company could market it as a practical and affordable electric city car.

Nano EV Comeback Still Not Confirmed

For now, there is no official confirmation of a Tata Nano EV. Ajay Jain's comments should be seen as an indication of the possibility rather than an announcement of a new product.

However, if Tata Motors does decide to revive the nameplate, an electric version could make much more sense today than a petrol-powered Nano did in the past.
