Tata Safari EV Could Challenge Mahindra XEV 9S With These Highlights

Tata Safari EV is expected to launch in January 2027. It could get an 80kWh battery and RWD/AWD options. The electric SUV will be offered in 6- and 7-seater versions.

Tata Motors is preparing to enter the premium three-row electric SUV space with the upcoming Safari EV, which is expected to launch in India in January 2027. The electric SUV will become the brand's new flagship EV and will be based on the Acti.ev+ platform, which also underpins the Harrier EV. The upcoming Tata Safari EV will be offered in both 6-seater and 7-seater configurations. It will primarily compete with the Mahindra XEV 9S and MG Hector Tomahawk EV. A larger battery pack, all-wheel-drive capability and a feature-loaded cabin could be among its key highlights.

Here are five key things that could help the Tata Safari EV take on its rivals.

1. Up to 80kWh Battery Pack and Long Range

One of the biggest highlights of the Tata Safari EV could be its battery options. While official specifications are yet to be revealed, the electric SUV is expected to get 65kWh and 75kWh battery packs, similar to the Harrier EV. Reports also suggest that Tata could introduce a larger 80kWh battery pack with the top variants. This could help the Safari EV deliver a longer driving range and make it more suitable for highway journeys. For reference, the Harrier EV's 75kWh battery version offers a claimed range of up to 627km in the RWD configuration and 622km in the AWD version. The actual range of the Safari EV will depend on its final battery and powertrain setup.

2. RWD and AWD Powertrain Options

The Tata Safari EV is expected to be available with both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Its performance figures could be similar to those of the Harrier EV. The RWD version of the Harrier EV uses a single electric motor producing 238PS and 315Nm of torque. The AWD version gets an additional front motor producing 158PS, taking the combined torque output to 504Nm. Tata could use a similar setup with the Safari EV, making it one of the most powerful electric SUVs in its lineup. However, the final motor specifications are yet to be confirmed.

3. 6- and 7-Seater Configurations

Another major advantage of the Safari EV could be its three-row seating layout. Tata Motors is expected to offer the electric SUV in both 6-seater and 7-seater versions. This will allow buyers to choose between a 6-seat layout with captain seats in the second row and a more practical 7-seat configuration. The spacious cabin could make the Safari EV an appealing option for families looking for a large electric SUV.

4. Premium Features and EV-Specific Design

The Safari EV is expected to get several EV-specific design elements, including a closed-off front grille, aerodynamic alloy wheels and exclusive badging. It could also receive updated lighting elements and new exterior colour options. Inside, the electric SUV could feature a triple-screen dashboard layout. Other expected highlights include ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a premium audio system, dual-zone climate control and a powered tailgate. The equipment list could also include a 540-degree surround-view camera, Level 2 ADAS, wireless smartphone charging, connected car technology and multiple driving modes.

5. Expected Price and Rivals

Tata Motors could position the Safari EV in the Rs 20 lakh to Rs 32 lakh price bracket (ex-showroom). This would put it in competition with the Mahindra XEV 9S and MG Hector Tomahawk EV. The Mahindra XEV 9S starts at Rs 20.65 lakh, while the MG Hector Tomahawk EV is priced at Rs 19.49 lakh. The Safari EV could differentiate itself with its three-row seating options, expected 80kWh battery pack and available AWD setup.
