Tata Scarlet to be positioned between Nexon and Curvv as a lifestyle SUV Boxy design inspired by Tata Sierra; petrol and EV options expected Likely to rival Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny with urban-focused features
Tata Motors is reportedly developing a brand-new compact SUV codenamed “Scarlet.” This upcoming model will be positioned between the Tata Nexon and the Tata Curvv, and is expected to be marketed as a lifestyle SUV.
Here's everything we know so far about this upcoming Tata Scarlet SUV.
Tata Scarlet is expected to have a boxy and upright design, inspired by the Tata Sierra. It will be built on a monocoque chassis for better ride comfort and handling. The design language will focus on a bold and upright front fascia, giving it a rugged and urban-ready appeal. It’s being referred to by many as a “mini Sierra” due to its styling cues.
The Scarlet will sit between the Tata Nexon and Curvv in Tata’s SUV lineup. It is expected to appeal to urban buyers looking for a compact yet lifestyle-oriented SUV. Despite its positioning, it won’t offer AWD or 4WD, which keeps it more road-focused rather than a full-fledged off-roader like the Mahindra Thar or Maruti Jimny.
While official details are still under wraps, the Scarlet may share its engine lineup with the Nexon or Curvv. Possible options include:
- 1.2L turbo petrol engine producing around 120 hp
- 1.2L direct injection turbo petrol engine with around 125 hp
There is no confirmation yet on whether a diesel engine will be offered.
Additionally, Tata is working on a new 1.5L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine, which may debut in the ICE version of the upcoming Tata Sierra. The same engine could also be considered for the Scarlet in the future.
In line with Tata’s focus on EVs, the Scarlet is also likely to get an electric version.
Tata Scarlet is expected to be priced between the Nexon and the Curvv, making it a smart alternative in the compact SUV segment. It could start around Rs 9 lakh and go up to Rs 15-16 lakh, depending on the variant and powertrain. Some price overlap with the Nexon is expected.
Tata Scarlet will rival lifestyle SUVs like the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny but with a more urban design and road-friendly features. It may not have off-road features like AWD, but its style, comfort, and features could make it popular in the compact SUV segment.
