Indian car market is predominantly dominated by front-wheel-drive SUVs, which are based on monocoque chassis and designed for urban roads. The success of the Mahindra Scorpio-N and Thar in urban centres suggests that Indian consumers are ready to accept lifestyle SUVs with ladder-frame construction and AWD/4x4 drivetrains.
A new set of all-wheel drive (AWD) SUVs is coming in our market, which will target this emerging customer segment. These vehicles will sit in different segments, but the AWD feature is the central unifying point. From Tata Sierra to Renault Boreal, here is a list of upcoming SUVs with AWD capabilities in the market.
SUV Name | Expected Launch |
Tata Sierra EV | December 2025 |
Mahindra XEV 7e | by March 2026 |
BE Rall-E | H1, 2026 |
Mahindra XUV700 Facelift | by March 2026 |
VW Tayron | December 2025 |
MG Majestor | 2026 |
Renault Boreal 7-seater | Mid-2026 |
Mahindra will launch two new electric SUVs with dual-motor AWD set-up. The company will soon introduce the XEV 7e (XUV700 Electric) before the end of this financial year. Moreover, the BE Rall-E concept based performance oriented electric SUV Coupe will arrive in the first half of 2026. Both SUVs will share the powertrain with the XEV 9e, which is offered with 59kWh and 79kWh battery packs.
Tata Motors will launch the Sierra Electric in December 2025 or January 2026. This electric SUV will be a front-wheel-drive model, but its top-end variant is likely to get a dual-motor AWD option. It will source the battery packs with the Tata Harrier EV.
A total of 4 new 7-seater SUVs will be launched with AWD capabilities in 2025-26. Mahindra will introduce the XUV700 facelift, which will get an AWD setup with a 2.0L turbo diesel engine. The SUV will receive cosmetic design and interior changes along with a longer list of comfort and convenience features. This 3-row SUV will be launched in the country before the end of this financial year.
Volkswagen has confirmed to launch the Tayron 7-seater SUV in the country by December 2025. It is likely to be powered by a 2.0L, 4-cylinder, turbo petrol engine that produces 204PS and 320Nm of torque, and is paired to a 7-speed DCT. This SUV comes with a standard AWD set-up. Similarly, the long-awaited MG Majestor 7-seater premium SUV with AWD set-up will arrive in our market in 2026. This SUV is powered by a 218bhp, 2.0L twin-turbo diesel engine, and is likely to get the on-demand four-wheel-drive with selectable drive modes.
Renault has confirmed to launch an all-new 3-row SUV in the country by mid-2026. It will be based on the CMF-B modular platform, which also underpins the Boreal SUV. The SUV is most likely to be powered by a 1.3L turbocharged petrol engine with manual and dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The higher-spec variants are likely to get an AWD drivetrain.
