Volkswagen has announced a new naming strategy that transfers the familiar designations of combustion-engine models to its all-electric ID. Family. The first model to be launched will be the ID. Polo in 2026, and its concept is called the ID.2all. This mark the significant shift in Volkswagen’s strategy, as the iconic VW Polo nameplate will be reintroduced in an all-new avatar.
Volkswagen has announced that it will transfer more established names to the electric portfolio with each new model generation. Moreover, all vehicles with conventional drives will continue to run under their previous names. In the name, ID. Stands for advanced technologies and electric mobility.
The new Volkswagen ID. Polo will be launched with its new name in the Polo’s 50th anniversary year as the first model of this strategy. Volkswagen will also introduced the GTI nameplate into the electric world. Launching in 2026, the ID. GTI Concept model will go into production as the ID. Polo GTI.
The Volkswagen ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI will make their first public debut at the IAA Mobility in Munich (8 to 14 September). Interestingly, the German brand will reveal an all-new electric compact SUV concept, the new ID. Cross on September 7, 2025. The production version of the ID. Cross will be launched at the end of 2026 as the electric counterpart to the T-Cross.
Volkswagen claims that the new models will have higher level of quality with soft materials, and the intelligent combination of digital and physical controls such as buttons and knobs in the steering wheel and cockpit.
