Audi is working on the development of the third-gen R8, and it is now claimed that this supercar will be powered by a plug-in hybrid setup. The possible debut of this Audi's supercar is by late 2027. The next-gen R8 is said to use components from VW Group’s upcoming SSP architecture and underpinnings of Lamborghini Temerario.
The plug-in hybrid of R8 is said to have progressed beyond the feasibility stage. The automaker is likely to focus on everyday usability and introduce Coupe and Spyder versions. With this possibility, the car could be positioned among high-end versions of the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT.
This version as per the previous generations is expected to feature some unique exterior and interior design. The expected debut of this luxury supercar in 2027 is set to happen around the launch of more powerful Temerario models.
This possible successor is likely to push the supercar’s top-end output close to 1000 bhp. Along with this much power output, the car aims for a 0-62mph under 3.0sec and a top speed close to the Temerario’s official 210mph. The R8 PHEV could become the most powerful and fastest road-going Audi to date.
Audi will be collaborating with the Volkswagen Group for this new two-seater supercar. This partnership was first forged in 2006 along with the launch of the original R8 and its mechanical twin, the Gallardo. That resulted in a move for Audi to step up into the supercar ranks. Now, the decision to restore the R8 is reportedly down to an agreement reached between the Audi board and its Volkswagen Group parent on how the brand can transition to an all-electric line-up. This collaboration will help extend the model cycles of select ICE models and expand the number of plug-in hybrids.
