Tata still holds 43.35 percent of EV market share JSW MG Motor is at 2nd position VinFast sells more EVs than Hyundai and Kia
Electric vehicles are gaining momentum, and this is evident from the rising sales of brands in the Indian market. The growth indicates rising buyer confidence in the electric mobility, which is further boosted by Government’s and automakers push for improving charging infrastructure. According to the FADA (Federation of Automobile Dealers Association), a total of 18470 electric vehicles were sold in January 2026 as against 11,935 units in the same month last year, reporting a YoY sales growth of 54.75 percent.
Electric Vehicles currently account for 3.60 percent of total car sales in our market in January 2026, while petrol still holds the top-spot with 47.49 percent market share. CNG accounts for 22.91% and Hybrid contributes 8.94% to total vehicles sold last month in India. Diesel still holds the key when it comes to midsize and bigger SUVs, as it still holds a significant 17.07% of market share in the passenger vehicle segment.

Tata Motors retains the top-spot with a market share of 43.35 percent in January 2026. The company sold a total of 8,007 electric passenger cars compared to 5313 units in January 2025, reporting a year-on-year sales growth of 50.71 percent.
Thanks to the high-demand for Windsor EV, JSW MG Motor retains its second position. The company sold 4703 EVs in January 2026 as against 4530 units in the same month last year, reporting a YoY sales growth of 3.82 percent. The company has a market share of 25.46 percent in the electric passenger vehicle category.
Mahindra’s born-electric EVs are getting good response from buyers, as it significantly increases the market share to 19.86 percent in January 2026. The company sold a total of 3668 units in January 2026 as against 740 units in the same month last year, reporting a YoY sales growth of 395.68 percent.
VinFast is at 4th position with 435 units of the VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs were sold in January 2026. The company has a market share of 2.36 percent. In fact, the Vietnamese EV brand has managed to beat the likes of Kia and Hyundai to grab 4th spot.
While Hyundai sold 333 EVs in January 2026, Kia sold 309 Units. BMW is at 6th position with 1.74 percent market share, as its iX1 LWB has been receiving an overwhelming response from buyers. The company sold 321 EVs in January 2026 as against 194 units in the same month last year, registering a YoY sales growth of 65.46 percent.
BYD slips to 8th position with 231 units dispatched to dealers in January 2026 as against 338 units in the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki has dispatched 215 units of the electric Vitara to dealerships for customers preview. The electric Vitara will launch before the end of this month. While Mercedes sold 70 EVs, Citroen dispatched 40 EVs in January 2026.
37 units of the Tesla Model Y were dispatched to dealerships in January 2026. On the other hand, Volvo dispatched 36 electric vehicles last month.
