Honda may launch a new sub-compact SUV in India. Likely to get a 1.2L petrol engine for affordable pricing. Will compete with Nexon, Brezza, Venue and more.
The compact SUV segment in India is one of the most popular and competitive categories today. Every major carmaker has at least one model in this space. Honda has been missing from this segment for some time, but that may soon change. The company is now considering a Honda sub-4 meter SUV for the Indian market. This model could play a big role in helping Honda increase its sales and presence in the coming years.

Small SUVs are in huge demand because they offer the SUV look, are easy to drive in cities and are priced in an affordable range. Honda currently sells the Amaze, City and the Elevate, but it does not have a competitor in the upcoming sub-compact SUV segment. Entering this segment will allow Honda to reach more customers, especially young buyers and first-time SUV owners.
Honda has confirmed that product studies are ongoing and the company is evaluating the right platform and powertrain options before giving a final approval.
The Honda upcoming sub 4 meter SUV may be built on Honda’s Global Small Car Platform, which was earlier used for cars like the Jazz and WR-V. Another possibility is a newer modular platform that can support hybrid and electric systems. This is important because the Indian market is slowly moving towards cleaner and more efficient powertrain options.
The design will likely follow Honda’s modern, clean and urban-friendly styling approach, focusing on practicality and space.
For petrol variants, the most likely engine choice is the 1.2-litre petrol engine that is already offered in the Honda Amaze. Using this engine helps the Honda new sub 4m SUV qualify for the lower 18% GST rate that applies to cars under 4 meters with small petrol engines. This means Honda will be able to price the SUV more competitively.
Honda may also consider a hybrid variant in the future to offer better fuel efficiency and stand out from its rivals. Hybrid technology is a strong area for Honda globally, and introducing it in this segment may give the brand a unique advantage.
When launched, Honda’s new small SUV will compete with strong and popular models like Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO. These SUVs already have a strong presence and wide feature lists. To attract customers, Honda may focus on offering better fuel efficiency, smooth drive quality and reliable performance.
The Honda sub-4 meter SUV is still in the evaluation stage. A final decision and development timeline are expected to be announced in the coming months. If approved, the launch could take place within the next one to two years as part of Honda’s new model rollout strategy for India.
