Honda and Tata Tech to co-develop compact and midsize SUVs in India First model to arrive by 2028 Development time to reduce by 50 per cent
Honda Cars India is adopting a new product and engineering strategy by partnering with global engineering services firm Tata Technologies to co-develop India-specific vehicles. A new report from Reuters claims that the new strategy is aiming to achieve up to 20% in cost reduction and halve development cycles by leveraging local engineering, sourcing, and cost structures.
Expected to be launched by 2028, the sub-4 meter compact SUV will be designed to take on the segment leaders such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV 3XO and Kia Sonet. This model will serve as Honda’s volume driver to expand its market share in one of India’s largest automotive segments. The upcoming Honda compact SUV is reportedly to be powered by Horse powertrains-sourced 1.2L turbo petrol engine, which will also support CNG and hybrid tech.
The company is reportedly working on an all-new 5-seater midsize SUV, which will replace the Elevate SUV in the country. This SUV is planned as the next offering under the joint strategy to compete directly in the popular midsize SUV space dominated by the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, and Maruti Grand Vitara.
Honda is also evaluating local platforms that could extend into a 3-row (7-seater) SUV. This SUV will directly competing with larger family-oriented SUVs like the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and Hyundai Alcazar.
Local Engineering & Sourcing: Honda is aiming to use Tata Technologies’ expertise in local component supplier ecosystems to design vehicles that meets the pricing expectations of Indian buyers.
Aggressive Cost Targets: this collaboration targets a 20% reduction in vehicle development costs. The company aims to price their upcoming vehicles aggressively without compromising on product quality.
Faster Market Response: by reducing development time by half Honda aims to introduce refresh and new feature-rich vehicles much faster to match rapidly changing market trends.
