Honda confirms plans for a new compact SUV in India Upcoming model could be more rugged than the WR-V Petrol and CNG options likely for the new SUV
Honda is preparing to return to India’s highly competitive sub-4 metre SUV segment with an all-new model expected to arrive by 2028.
The company recently confirmed its future product strategy for India during its FY2026 financial results conference. As part of this plan, Honda will introduce India-focused products designed around local customer needs and market demand.
This upcoming SUV could become an important model for the brand, especially since Honda currently does not have a product in the country’s highest-selling passenger vehicle segment.

Unlike the older WR-V, the new Honda SUV is expected to have a much stronger SUV identity.
Reports suggest the model could feature a more upright design, high ground clearance, and a tougher road presence similar to larger SUVs. Honda may give it a boxier stance with bold front and rear styling to attract buyers looking for a rugged compact SUV.
This could help the company clearly separate the new model from hatchback-based crossovers and position it against popular rivals like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and upcoming compact SUVs from Renault and Mahindra.
Honda is expected to offer the new compact SUV with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.
A factory-fitted CNG option is also likely to be part of the lineup. This could help Honda target customers looking for lower running costs, especially in states where CNG demand continues to grow quickly.
At least initially, the chances of a hybrid version appear low. Honda may focus on keeping pricing competitive in one of India’s most price-sensitive segments.
Honda says it plans to change the way it develops products for India. The company will now focus more on local driving conditions, climate, customer preferences, and government policies while designing future vehicles.
Honda President Toshihiro Mibe confirmed that the company will launch “strategic models” for India from 2028 onwards. These products will mainly target the sub-4 metre and mid-size vehicle segments.
This marks a shift in Honda’s approach as the brand looks to strengthen its position in India after losing ground in recent years.
Before launching the new compact SUV, Honda plans to introduce several other models in India over the next two years.
Later this month, the company will launch the updated Honda City facelift and the new Honda ZR-V SUV. The ZR-V will arrive as a fully imported model from Japan.
Honda is also preparing a facelifted Elevate and the Prelude sports coupe for India. In early 2027, the company is expected to launch a locally made electric SUV based on its new EV platform.
