Japanese auto giant Honda Car India will finally enter the highly profitable and competitive midsize SUV segment with an all new model. Slated to be launched around the 2023 festive season, the upcoming SUV has just been spotted for the first time on Indian roads. Although clad in heavy camouflage, it gives us a rough idea of what to expect. Take a look.
While the heavy camouflage makes it hard to notice any details, the Honda midsize SUV does look to have an upright grille with slim LED headlights, similar to the Honda HR-V sold abroad. Move to the side and you will notice roof rails, new alloy wheels and flared wheel arches.
A sunroof also seems to be part of the package. While the rear, is expected to feature sleek looking tail lights, a sloping roofline, and a boot lid spoiler.
The spy shots also reveal the high-ish shoulder line and a large glass area. The wing mirrors have a camera attached to them as Honda could offer a 360-degree camera or the brand’s Lane Watch system instead.
Expect the Honda compact SUV to share its powertrain options with that of 5th-Generation City. This includes a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor that makes 120 bhp with 145 Nm of peak torque alongside a 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle strong-hybrid motor, pumping out 109 bhp and 145 Nm torque. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or a CVT auto for the former while the latter features an e-CVT automatic gearbox only.
Unlike some of its rivals, the upcoming midsize SUV will not offer a diesel powertrain. The company is not planning to continue with its diesel models due to the implementation of
Real Driving Emission Norms that come into effect from April 2023.
Reports suggest that Honda Car India will launch the new compact SUV in India by the end of 2023. The brand is expected to announce the price of the upcoming model during this festive season.
Upon launch, it will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, MG Astor, VW Taigun, Maruti Grand Vitara, Kia Seltos, Škoda Kushaq, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.
