Hyundai Pune Plant Can Build Hybrid Cars, Raising Hopes for Creta Hybrid

Hyundai Pune plant is ready for future hybrid cars. Creta Hybrid could launch in India in 2027. Pune plant capacity to reach 3.20 lakh units by 2030.

Hyundai Motor India has inaugurated its Talegaon manufacturing plant in Pune, Maharashtra, opening the door for future hybrid car production in the country. The plant, which was officially inaugurated on October 14, 2026, can support both petrol-powered cars and hybrid vehicles in the future. This development has raised hopes for the next-generation Hyundai Creta Hybrid, which is expected to arrive in India in 2027, according to reports. However, Hyundai has not confirmed the launch timeline or whether the upcoming Creta Hybrid will be manufactured at the Pune plant. The company plans to invest up to Rs 11,000 crore at the facility in phases and increase its annual production capacity from 1.70 lakh to 3.20 lakh vehicles by 2030.

Hyundai Pune Plant Is Ready for Hybrid Cars

One of the key features of Hyundai’s new Pune plant is its flexible production system. It can support different vehicle models and powertrains, including internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid vehicles in the future. This will give Hyundai more options as it expands its product range in India. Hybrid cars combine a petrol engine with an electric motor to improve fuel efficiency, making them an option for buyers who want better mileage without fully switching to an electric vehicle. Hyundai has not yet shared details about the hybrid models planned for production at the Pune facility. It has also not announced when hybrid vehicle manufacturing will begin there.

Hyundai Creta Hybrid Could Be in the Pipeline

The new plant’s ability to build hybrid vehicles has brought the next-generation Hyundai Creta Hybrid back into focus. Reports suggest that the next-generation Creta could launch in India in 2027 and may be offered with a hybrid powertrain. If launched, the Creta Hybrid could give buyers another option in the popular midsize SUV segment, where fuel efficiency and running costs are important factors.

However, Hyundai has not officially confirmed the Creta Hybrid or its specifications. Details such as its engine, electric motor, expected mileage, features and price remain unknown. It is also not clear whether the model, if launched, will be built in Pune or at another facility. For now, the Pune plant’s hybrid-ready production system shows that Hyundai is preparing its manufacturing operations to support different types of powertrains in the coming years.

Hyundai to Invest Rs 11,000 Crore in Pune Plant

Hyundai acquired the Talegaon plant from General Motors India in 2023, and vehicle production began in the fourth quarter of 2025 with the new Hyundai Venue. The facility currently has an annual production capacity of 1.70 lakh vehicles. Hyundai plans to raise this to 3.20 lakh units by 2030 through phased expansion.

Once the planned expansion is complete, Hyundai Motor India’s combined annual manufacturing capacity at its Pune and Chennai facilities will reach nearly 11.4 lakh vehicles. The Pune plant also has an engine shop with an annual capacity of 1.50 lakh units. The new-generation Hyundai Venue is manufactured exclusively at the Pune facility. Hyundai also plans to expand exports from the plant to more than 35 countries.

Hyundai Focuses on Future Mobility Technology

Hyundai is also working with seven leading Indian institutes on nearly 40 research projects covering battery technology, electrification and future mobility. The company’s new Pune facility uses digital manufacturing systems under its E-FOREST platform. These include AI-based quality inspections, defect detection and predictive maintenance to improve production efficiency. The plant also has digital simulation and augmented reality-based training systems for employees. These technologies are aimed at improving manufacturing quality, worker training and workplace safety. The focus on research and advanced manufacturing could help Hyundai prepare for changing customer needs as hybrid and electric vehicles become a bigger part of the Indian market.

Hyundai India Marks 40 Lakh Exports

Along with the plant inauguration, Hyundai announced that its cumulative passenger vehicle exports from India have crossed 40 lakh units since exports began in 1999. The company has also recorded nearly 1 crore domestic passenger vehicle sales during its 30 years in India. The Pune plant will play a larger role in Hyundai’s production and export plans as its capacity grows over the next few years.

While the possibility of hybrid production adds to the excitement around Hyundai’s future models, the company is yet to confirm the Creta Hybrid for India. More details about its future hybrid plans are expected once Hyundai makes an official announcement.
