The Indian auto industry has witnessed a big change in the past couple of years. Earlier, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai were the top two manufacturers; however, things are changing rapidly. Homegrown automakers, Mahindra and Tata Motors are growing at a fast pace and have already defeated Hyundai multiple times in the past two years to grab 2nd position in the list of top car makers in India.
February 2025 sales brought a major reshuffle in the rankings, as Mahindra managed to beat Hyundai to grab 2nd largest car maker in India. In fact, the gap between Tata Motors and Hyundai is also narrowing. Hyundai sits in 3rd position, while Tata Motors remains at the 4th position. Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the only constant and remains at the top of the chart with domestic sales of 163,501 units in February 2025.
Mahindra - 50420 Units

Tata Motors - 46435 units
- Mahindra sold a total of 52386 utility vehicles including domestic and exports.
- In the domestic passenger vehicle segment, Mahindra sold a total of 50420 utility vehicles and registered an impressive 19% Year-on-Year sales growth.
- Hyundai has registered a total sales, Domestic + Exports, of 58,727 units in the month of February 2025.
- In the domestic market, Hyundai sold 47,727 units in February 2027. The Korean brand exported 11,000 units last month. The brand has recorded a Year-on-Year sales growth of 6.8 percent.
- Hyundai's domestic sales declined in February by a good 4.3 seconds. In February 2024, Hyundai had sold 50201 units in India.
- In the domestic passenger vehicle segment, Tata Motors sold a total of 46,435 cars in February 2025. The company has reported a YoY sales decline of 9.43%.
- The company had sold 51,267 vehicles in the same month last year. In fact, Tata's month-on-month sales also declined.
- In the EV segment, Tata sold a total of 5343 electric cars in the month of February 2025 as against 6,923 units in the same month last year. The company has reported a YoY electric vehicle sales decline of 22.82%.
