A new Tata Altroz CNG test mule has been spotted. It could get a turbo-petrol CNG engine. The update may bring more power and better performance.
Tata Motors could be preparing a major update for the Altroz. A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Altroz CNG has been spotted testing around Pune, and it has started a new round of speculation. The test car carried a "CNG Only" sticker on the steering wheel, suggesting Tata is working on a new CNG version of the premium hatchback.
While the company has not confirmed any details, reports suggest this could be the long-awaited Altroz with a turbo-petrol CNG engine.
The biggest talking point is the possibility of a turbocharged CNG engine. Tata already offers this setup with the Nexon, where the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 99 bhp and 170 Nm of torque.
If the same powertrain is introduced in the Altroz, it would be a big step up from the current i-CNG model, which makes 72 bhp and 103 Nm of torque.
A turbo CNG engine would not only improve performance but also make everyday driving easier, especially on highways and during overtaking.

The Altroz is currently available with petrol, CNG and diesel engine options. In fact, it is the only hatchback in India that still offers a diesel engine.
However, the hatchback has been losing ground as more buyers shift towards SUVs. In May 2026, the Altroz sold fewer than 3,000 units, placing it among the lower-selling hatchbacks in the market.
A more powerful CNG version could help bring fresh interest to the model and attract buyers looking for both performance and low running costs.
Tata had earlier offered the Altroz i-Turbo and the Racer edition, but those versions are no longer part of the regular lineup.
A turbo CNG version could give the Altroz a unique position in the premium hatchback segment. While the Hyundai i20 N Line focuses on performance, Tata could offer buyers a combination of stronger performance and better fuel savings with CNG.
Tata Motors has not confirmed what the latest test vehicle is testing. For now, the turbo CNG engine remains a possibility based on recent spy shots.
If the company brings the Nexon's turbo-petrol CNG technology to the Altroz, it could become one of the most interesting hatchbacks in its segment.
