January 2025 was a profitable month for the Indian automobile industry as nearly 4.01 lakh passenger vehicles (PVs) were sold, compared to 3.93 lakh units in the same month last year. This marked a YoY sales growth of 2.1 Percent, while the MoM sales witnessed a massive hike of 43.2 Percent. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor India retained their first and second spots as India’s top OEMs with total sales of 1,73,599 units and 54,003 units, respectively.
Mahindra & Mahindra was the third top car manufacturer of the month, recording a YoY growth of 17.6 Percent. However, Tata Motors experienced a significant sales decline of 10.4 Percent, with sales of 48,075 units. The indigenous automakers had a noticeable sales gap of 2,584 units. Let’s take a look at model-wise sales figures of Mahindra and Tata.
The Mahindra Scorpio (Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic) remained the top sales contributor with total sales of 15,442 units opposed to 14,293 units. It accounted a YoY sales growth of 8 Percent. The Bolero and XUV 700 registered total sales of 8,682 units and 8,399 units, respectively. While the Bolero’s YoY sales declined by 13 Percent, the XUV 700 posted a YoY growth of 17 Percent. The Mahindra Thar (3-door and 5-door) was the fourth top-selling car from the home-grown automaker, which recorded sales of 7,557 units.
Mahindra’s most affordable SUV offering – XUV 3XO – also clocked decent sales of 8,454 units against 4,817 units in the corresponding month last year. The subcompact SUV posted a massive YoY growth of 76 Percent. The Mahindra XUV400 EV, however, saw a YoY sales decline of 59 Percent with sales of just 288 units. In January 2025, the indigenous automaker dispatched 1,837 units of the new born-electric BE 6 and XEV 9e SUVs.
The Tata Nexon and Punch SUVs were the top-selling models from Tata in January 2025, ranking first and second, respectively. However, both models witness a YoY sales decline of 10 Percent. While the Nexon registered sales of 15,397 units against 17,182 units, the Punch posted total sales of 16,231 units, down from 17,978 units of the same month last year. The sales of the Tata Tiago hatchback increased marginally. The carmaker managed to sell 6,807 units of the Tiago in January 2025 compared to 6,482 units in January 2024.
The Tata Altroz suffered a massive sales decline of 59 Percent with total sales of 2,033 units. It was 4,935 units in the same month previous year. With total sales of 1,484 units, the Tigor also posted a fall of 4 Percent. Last month, the home-grown automaker managed to sell 3,087 units of the Curvv (including both ICE version and electric iteration). The Tata Harrier and Safari monthly sales stood at 1,488 units and 1,548 units against 2,626 units and 2,893 units in the corresponding month last year, respectively. While the Harrier’s sales declined by 43 Percent, the Safari’s sales dropped by 46 Percent.
