The Delhi Government has announced that the overage petrol and diesel vehicles will no longer be allowed to refuel at petrol pumps from April 1st. This restriction applies to petrol vehicles over 15 years old and diesel vehicles older than 10 years old. Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Sign Sirsa, who took charge recently,y said that the government will be taking stringent steps to bring down vehicular emissions in the city.
It also has been said that gadgets will be installed at petrol pumps to help identify overage vehicles and no fuel will be provided to them.
The Delhi Government will communicate the refueling ban to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, which will issue the necessary order to the station operators. Delhi currently has around 500 petrol and diesel stations, and all will be equipped with devices to enforce the restriction.
The capital has been consistently ranked among the most polluted cities in the world, and the air quality has been on a great decline. In 2018, the Supreme Court ordered a ban on the overage of petrol and diesel vehicles in Delhi, but still, many such vehicles are operated.
Apart from the ban and no-fuel to old vehicles, it has been said by the officials that by the end of 2025, almost 90 percent of Delhi's public CNG buses will be retired. The government plans to replace these buses with electric buses to promote cleaner and more sustainable public transport.
