The race to 2nd position in the Indian car market is getting intense, as Hyundai managed to beat Mahindra and Tata Motors to become second largest car maker in August 2025 sales. However, in the current year, Mahindra still holds the edge over Hyundai and Tata Motors. If Mahindra improves its sales in next couple of months, it will emerge as the second largest car manufacturer.

Hyundai registered a domestic sales of 44,001 vehicles in August 2025, which is 11.5% less compared to 49,525 units in the same period last year. However, the brand’s sales remain stable as it reported a marginal 0.06% MoM rise. Thanks to the Creta, Venue and Exter, the Korean brand regained number 2 position in the month of August 2025.
Hyundai has exported 16,500 units in August 2025 as against 13,650 units in the same period a year, registering an impressive YoY growth of 20.88%. In the current year (January-August 2025), Hyundai exported a total of 1,18,840 units.

Tata Motors is at third position with 41,001 passenger vehicles sold in domestic market in August 2025. The company has reported a YoY decline of 7.12 percent in sales, as it had sold 44,142 vehicles in the same month last year.
The big news is that Tata Motors sold a total of 8540 electric passenger vehicles in August 2025 as against 5,935 units in the same month last year, registering a substantial YoY growth of 43.89 percent. The company has also exported 2,314 vehicles in August 2025, which is again 573% higher compared to the August 2024.
In the utility vehicles segment, Mahindra sold 39,399 vehicles in the domestic market in August 2025. The company reported a regrowth of -9% as it sold 43,277 vehicles in the same month last year. The overall sales, including domestic + export, stood at 40,846 units.
In the FY26 (April-August 2025), Mahindra sold a total of 241337 utility vehicles in domestic market as against 241337 vehicles in the same period last year. The company reported a substantial YoY increase of 15% in sales.
