Renault, Mahindra and Volkswagen to Launch All-New Sub-4m SUVs in 2027
Renault to launch Bridger SUV in 2027 Volkswagen confirms re-entry in the sub-4 meter space Mahindra Vision S compact SUV arriving in Q1, 2027
The sub-4m SUV segment in India is set to witness a major influx of new models in 2027. Renault, Mahindra, and Volkswagen are each preparing ground-up sub-4 meter compact crossovers to capture some market share from established players like the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet.
Renault Bridger
Renault has confirmed that the Bridger Concept based compact SUV will be launched in the Indian market in 2027, most probably in first half. The company could reveal the production-spec version of the SUV at the 2027 Bharat Mobility Global Expo. It is based on the Renault Group Modular Platform (RGMP) that also underpins the new-generation Renault Duster. The Bridger concept previews a boxy, rugged sub-4m crossover. Some of the design highlights include an illuminated front grille, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, flared wheel arches, flat roof with prominent roofline and aggressive bumpers.
Renault confirms that the new SUV will come with a 400-litres of boot space, and has 200mm of rear knee room. The new Renault Bridger will also mark the debut of Renault’s new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine in India. It will also receive a strong hybrid version, followed by a pure EV derivative.
Mahindra Vision S
The Mahindra Vision S is reportedly to be the smallest member of the popular Scorpio family. It will be marketed as a lifestyle SUV, featuring the typical boxy-rugged design, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, heavy cladding and typical Mahindra face. It is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2027, most probably around Auto Expo 2027. The new Vision S will be the first model to be based on Mahindra’s new flexible NU_IQ platform.
The SUV has been spotted testing numerous times, and looks largely identical to its original concept. Some of the design highlights include pixel LED lighting, flush door handles, L-shaped DRLs, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, Level 2 ADAS, and a dual-screen digital layout. The SUV is expected to be offered with a 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.5L diesel engines. Mahindra is also likely to introduce a hybrid and a pure-electric version of the SUV.
Volkswagen compact SUV
Volkswagen has officially announced to re-enter the sub-4 meter category with an all-new compact SUV in 2027. It will be a re-badged version of the Skoda Kylaq; however, the SUV will carry the VW brand identity. The compact SUV will have an all-new front fascia, new alloy wheels, and revised tail-gate and tail-lights. The cabin will also receive changes in the form of new colour scheme, new upholstery and door trims, a larger instrument console and others.
Based on the MQB AO IN platform, the new VW compact SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine producing 110bhp and 178Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed torque converter automatic.
