Renault Bridger and Mahindra Vision S SUVs to launch with boxy design Next-gen Kia Sonet and Tata Nexon to launch next year Volkswagen confirms re-entry in the sub-4 meter space
India’s sub-4 metre SUV segment is set to witness the arrival of multiple new models in 2027, featuring ground-up new platform updates, hybrid powertrains and rugged off-road designs. Here are the top five sub-compact SUVs coming in 2027 to redefine the market.

Renault will introduce the production version of the Bridger concept in 2027. The concept previews a boxy, muscular compact SUV positioned between the Kiger and Duster.
Platform & Design: It will be based on the modular RGMP platform that also underpins the new generation Renault Duster. The production model is likely to remain true to its original concept, featuring wide wheel arches, a flatter roof, boxy shape and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
Cabin & Practicality: It is expected to be offered with dual connected screens for infotainment and driver’s display, powered and ventilated front seats, panoramic sunroof, and others. Renault reveals that the Bridger offers 200mm of rear knee room and a segment-leading 400-litres of boot.
Powertrain: it will mark the debut of Renault’s new 1.2L turbo petrol engine, which will be compatible with a hybrid setup. The SUV’s electric derivative is also under development.

To be marketed as a lifestyle SUV, the production-spec Vision S will bring Scorpio-esque road presence to the sub-4m class. In fact, it is reportedly to be the smallest member of the Scorpio family.
Platform & Design: It will be the first model built on Mahindra’s NU_IQ modular platform. Some of the design highlights include pixel-style LED lighting, thick body cladding, boxy silhouette with flatter roof, flush-fitting door handles and a tailgate-mounted spare heel.
Features & Tech: the leaked images reveal that the SUV will get dual-screen digital setup, a new Mahindra steering wheel, physical controls for most of the functions, panoramic glass roof, LEVEL 2 ADAS and others.
Powertrain: it is likely to be offered with a 1.2L turbo petrol and 1.5L turbo diesel engines. In future, the SUV will also get electric and hybrid drivetrains.
After a decade on the market, Tata Motors is developing a complete generational overhaul for its top-selling Nexon compact SUV. In fact, testing of the SUV has already been started. A possible debut at the 2027 Auto Expo can’t be ignored.
Platform: it is expected to be based on the modified X1 architecture, most likely the new modular ATLAS platform. The SUV will offer improved structural rigidity and cabin space.
Cabin Changes: the next Nexon could receive a new touchscreen infotainment unit with upgraded UI/UX, powered and ventilated front seats, and expanded LEVEL-2 ADAS capabilities.
Powertrains: it is expected to retain turbo-petrol, diesel and CNG options alongside its EV counterpart.
Kia has started testing the next-gen Sonet, which is expected to be launched in early 2027. The second-gen Kia Sonet receives a ground-up redesign focusing heavily on solving rear-cabin space issue.
Platform: it will be based on the Syros-sourced K1 platform, providing a longer wheelbase and superior rear knee room.
Key changes: the spy images reveal that the SUV will have boxy design with wider body, Sorento-inspired boomerang LED DRLs, dual 12.3-inch displays, panoramic sunroof and an upgraded LEVEL-2 ADAS.
Powertrains: it will retain current 1.2L petrol, 1.0L turbo-petrol, and 1.5L diesel engines, with a strong-hybrid variant under development.

Volkswagen has officially announced to re-enter the sub-4 meter category with an all-new compact SUV, which will be based on the Skoda Kylaq.
Platform: it will be based on the heavily-localised MQB AO-IN platform that also underpins the Kylaq.
Key details: the SUV will be the re-badged Kylaq, but it will carry Volkswagen’s identity. The small SUV will have new front fascia, revised lighting, and new dashboard layout and interior colour schemes.
Powertrain: VW compact SUV will be powered by a 115 PS, 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed torque converter automatic.
