Maruti’s Big AI Plan for Future SUVs and EVs

Maruti aims to reduce car development time using AI. Nine new models, including SUVs and EVs, are planned. Higher localization and supplier collaboration are key focus areas.

Maruti Suzuki is preparing for the next phase of growth in India, and artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to play a major role in that journey. As competition increases and new technologies reshape the automotive industry, the country's largest carmaker is looking at AI-powered tools to develop future vehicles faster and more efficiently.

The move comes as Maruti plans to expand its SUV and EV portfolio over the next few years.

AI to Reduce Development Time

Developing a new vehicle is a long process that involves design, testing, validation, and production planning. Currently, Maruti Suzuki takes around 48 months to develop a new model.

The company now aims to reduce that timeline to about 36 months by using AI, machine learning, and advanced simulation technologies.

These digital tools allow engineers to test and validate vehicle components virtually before physical prototypes are built. As a result, potential issues can be identified much earlier, helping save both time and resources.

More SUVs and EVs on the Way

Maruti is planning a major product push over the next three years. The company is expected to launch nine new models, with SUVs making up the majority of the lineup.

Several of these upcoming models are likely to feature a mix of petrol, flex-fuel, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains.

Popular SUVs such as the Fronx, Brezza, Grand Vitara, and Victoris have already helped strengthen Maruti's presence in the utility vehicle segment. The upcoming launches are expected to further expand the brand's reach in this growing category.

Working Closely With Suppliers

Another key part of Maruti's strategy is involving suppliers much earlier in the development process.

Instead of completing vehicle design first and then starting component development, the company plans to carry out multiple activities simultaneously. This includes component engineering, tooling, manufacturing preparation, and product development.

By working together from the beginning, Maruti aims to reduce delays and improve overall efficiency.

Focus on Higher Localization

Maruti is also targeting more than 80 percent localization for future models.

A higher level of local sourcing can help reduce production costs, improve supply chain stability, and lower dependence on imported components. It can also make it easier for the company to increase production as demand grows in both domestic and export markets.

The strategy comes at a time when Maruti continues to post strong sales numbers. The company recently recorded its highest-ever monthly sales, crossing 1.90 lakh units, while exports also saw healthy growth.

Preparing for the Future

With AI-powered development tools, greater supplier collaboration, and higher localization levels, Maruti Suzuki is preparing for a faster and more flexible product development cycle.

As the company gets ready to launch a new generation of SUVs and electric vehicles, these changes could help bring future models to the market quicker while keeping costs under control.
