Toyota Fortuner Rival Making a Comeback After 5 Years

Mitsubishi Pajero returns after a five-year gap. New SUV will use the Triton's ladder-frame platform. Expected to rival Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest.

Mitsubishi Pajero is all set to return after being away from global markets for nearly five years. Known for its strong road presence and off-road capability, the Pajero was once a popular choice among SUV buyers across the world. Now, Mitsubishi is preparing an all-new generation model that will take on rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest, and Isuzu MU-X.

The new Pajero will bring major changes under the skin while continuing to focus on capability, comfort, and practicality.

Built on a New Platform

One of the biggest updates is the platform. The next-generation Pajero will be based on the same ladder-frame architecture as the latest Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck.

This marks a return to the SUV's roots. Earlier Pajero models used ladder-frame construction before Mitsubishi switched to a different setup in later generations. The new platform is expected to improve off-road performance while also helping the company reduce development costs.

By sharing its underpinnings with the Triton, Mitsubishi can also use its latest four-wheel-drive technologies and proven mechanical components.

Diesel Engine Options Expected

Powering the new Pajero is expected to be a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine borrowed from the Triton.

In global markets, this engine is available in two versions. The standard version produces 184 PS, while the more powerful twin-turbo version develops 204 PS. A 6-speed automatic gearbox is likely to be offered as standard.

The SUV is also expected to feature Mitsubishi's Super Select II four-wheel-drive system, which has built a strong reputation among off-road enthusiasts over the years.

More Premium Than Before

Mitsubishi says the new Pajero will get its own suspension setup instead of simply carrying over the Triton's hardware.

The aim is to offer a more comfortable driving experience without compromising off-road ability. The cabin is also expected to have a unique design with better materials, modern technology, and premium features.

This will help position the Pajero as a flagship SUV in Mitsubishi's global lineup.

Fresh Design Inside and Out

Teaser images released by Mitsubishi suggest a completely new look for the upcoming Pajero.

The front end appears to feature a full-width LED light bar and a modern lighting signature inspired by newer Mitsubishi models. The overall design looks more premium and futuristic while still maintaining the tough SUV character that the Pajero is known for.

The SUV is also expected to get a spacious three-row cabin, making it suitable for both family use and long-distance travel.

Could It Replace the Pajero Sport?

The return of the Pajero has also raised questions about the future of the Pajero Sport.

The current Pajero Sport has been around since 2015 and is approaching the end of its lifecycle in many markets. While Mitsubishi has not confirmed any plans, the new Pajero's size, platform, and seven-seat layout could allow it to take over the role currently played by the Pajero Sport.

Launch Timeline

Mitsubishi has already confirmed that the Pajero will be part of its future product strategy. The SUV is expected to make its global debut in the coming months.

While there is no official word on an India launch yet, the return of the Pajero is likely to attract plenty of attention from SUV enthusiasts who have been waiting for the iconic nameplate to make a comeback.
