Mahindra New Electrification Strategy: XUV 7XO Hybrid and XEV 9S Range-Extender Under Development

XUV 7XO to get a series-parallel hybrid powertrain XEV 9S Range Extender will arrive to eliminate range-anxiety

As the global market dynamics shift, Mahindra is reshaping its long-term powertrain roadmap. The company has no immediate plans of launching electrified variant of its newly revealed Lifestyler pickup truck. The Scorpio Lifestyler will arrive with conventional diesel and turbo-petrol powertrains. The SUV maker is redirecting engineering resources towards hybrid and range-ester technologies for its passenger vehicle line-up. Mahindra’s two flagship SUVs, the XUV 7XO and the XEV 9S will receive a full hybrid and a range-extender powertrain, respectively.

Mahindra is reportedly developing a series-parallel strong hybrid powertrain for the XUV 7XO. This hybrid setup seamlessly blends a petrol combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack. The SUV will operates on electric power during low-speed, bumper-to-bumper drive, significantly boosting city fuel economy.

The petrol engine drives the wheels at highway cruising speeds while simultaneously charging the onboard battery through regenerative braking. This hybrid setup eliminates range anxiety, as it could offer over 1000km range on a single tank of fuel.

Mahindra XEV 9S: Range-Extender Technology

While the XEV 9S electric SUV was initially conceived around dedicated battery-electric (INGLO) platform architecture, Mahindra is actively developing a Range-Extender Hybrid system. Unlike a traditional parallel hybrid, the internal combustion engine in an EREV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) does not directly drive the wheels. In this setup, a small-capacity petrol engine acts as a generator to charge the high-voltage battery on the go.

The vehicle retains the instant torque and refined driving dynamics of a pure EV, driven entirely by its electric motors. Mahindra engineers will need to make extensive structural and safety modifications to the INGLO platform to house a generator engine, exhaust routing, fuel tank, and thermal management systems.
