Mahindra XUV 7XO hybrid could offer over 1,000km range. SUV expected to get a series-parallel strong hybrid system. Electric power could be used during low-speed city driving.
Mahindra is working on new electrified powertrains for its upcoming passenger vehicle range, with the XUV 7XO expected to get a strong hybrid setup. The hybrid version could offer a claimed driving range of more than 1,000km on a single tank of fuel.
The development comes as Mahindra looks to expand beyond conventional petrol, diesel and pure electric powertrains. The company is also working on range-extender technology for the XEV 9S.
The Mahindra XUV 7XO is reportedly being developed with a series-parallel strong hybrid powertrain. This setup will combine a petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery pack.
The hybrid system is expected to use electric power during low-speed driving and in bumper-to-bumper traffic. This should help reduce fuel consumption in city conditions, where conventional petrol engines tend to be less efficient.
At higher speeds, the petrol engine can drive the wheels while also charging the battery. Regenerative braking will further help replenish the battery during deceleration.

One of the biggest advantages of the upcoming XUV 7XO hybrid could be its long driving range. Mahindra is targeting more than 1,000km on a single tank of fuel.
The combination of electric assistance, regenerative braking and a petrol engine could help the SUV deliver better fuel efficiency without requiring regular charging from an external source. This could make the hybrid powertrain particularly useful for both city driving and long-distance journeys.
Alongside the XUV 7XO hybrid, Mahindra is developing a range-extender powertrain for the XEV 9S electric SUV. Unlike the XUV 7XO’s strong hybrid system, the range-extender setup will use a petrol engine primarily as a generator. The engine will charge the high-voltage battery, while the electric motors will continue to drive the wheels.
This means the XEV 9S range extender is expected to retain the instant response and driving characteristics of an EV while using a petrol engine to extend its overall range.
Mahindra currently has no immediate plans for an electrified version of the newly revealed Scorpio Lifestyler pickup, which is expected to arrive with conventional diesel and turbo-petrol engines.
Instead, the company appears to be focusing its hybrid and range-extender technology on its passenger vehicle line-up. The XUV 7XO and XEV 9S are expected to be among the key models to benefit from these new powertrain technologies.
