Five new off-road SUVs are coming to India soon. New Mahindra Thar, Toyota Fortuner and Land Cruiser FJ are on the way. Hyundai and JSW are also preparing rugged new SUVs.
The off-road SUV segment is set to get a lot more exciting in the coming years. Carmakers like Mahindra, Toyota, Hyundai and JSW are working on several new models for India, giving SUV fans more options than ever before.
From a new-generation Fortuner to an updated Thar and a brand-new Hyundai off-road SUV, here's a look at five upcoming models expected to arrive by 2028.
Mahindra is expected to launch the updated two-door Thar later this year. The SUV is likely to get a fresh front design with a new grille, updated LED headlamps and C-shaped LED DRLs, similar to the Thar Roxx. Inside, Mahindra could add features like ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, passive keyless entry and push-button start. The engine options are expected to remain the same.

JSW Motors will enter the passenger vehicle market with a new plug-in hybrid SUV later this year. The SUV is expected to be based on the Chery Jetour Traveller C-DM sold overseas. It will have a bold, boxy design and is likely to use a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine with dual electric motors. The plug-in hybrid system is expected to offer more than 100 km of electric-only range, making it one of the first SUVs of its kind in India.
Toyota is also preparing the next-generation Fortuner, which is expected to launch in India in the first half of 2027. The new model is likely to get a completely updated design, a more premium cabin and several new features. Expected highlights include a 12.3-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof, electric power steering and Level 2 ADAS. Toyota is expected to continue with the current diesel engine options.
Hyundai has confirmed that it is working on a new off-road SUV for India. Although the company has not revealed many details, the SUV is expected to have a rugged design and compete with lifestyle SUVs in the market. It could be offered with petrol and strong hybrid powertrains. The hybrid version may also get an all-wheel-drive system using an electric motor for the rear wheels. The launch is expected around 2028.
Toyota is also expected to bring the Land Cruiser FJ to India. The SUV will sit below the Fortuner and will be built on a proper ladder-frame chassis for better off-road capability. Globally, it is expected to come with a 2.7-litre petrol engine, a 6-speed automatic gearbox and a four-wheel-drive system. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are also expected to join the lineup in the future. Toyota is likely to launch the Land Cruiser FJ in India by the end of 2028.
