Safari EV to borrow Harrier EVs powertrain, platform and tech. Avinya EV is set to debut in 2027 with 800V architecture.
Tata Motors recently announced its plan to expand its Indian product portfolio with six models by FY2031. The upcoming lineup will include facelifts, variants and powertrain upgrades and new derivatives of its existing models. As part of its long-term EV strategy, the homegrown automaker aims to achieve a 30 percent EV penetration within its PV (passenger vehicle) range over the next five years. To support this target, Tata Motors will expand its EV lineup four new models, which are expected to capture a 15-20 percent of the total PV sales by FY2031.
Meanwhile, Tata Motors is gearing up to launch the Safari EV during the 2026 Diwali season, followed by the all-new Avinya premium EV in 2027. Here’re the key details of these upcoming electric SUVs.
Built on Tata’s Acti.ev+ platform, the Tata Safari EV is expected to share its powertrain with the Harrier EV. The latter is available with two battery pack options – 65kWh and 75kWh – delivering a claimed range of up to 622km per charge. However, the Safari EV’s claimed driving range could be slightly different due to its bigger dimensions and weight.
The Safari EV might also source the TiDAL (Tata Intelligent Digital Architecture Layer) electrical and electronic architecture with the Harrier EV. This platform supports the integrated of several advanced technologies including complex connected car features, a 540-degree camera, OTA (over-the-air) updates and ADAS functionalities.
On the exterior, the Safari EV is expected to feature a sealed-off grille, revised bumpers, redesigned headlamps, aero-optimized alloy wheels and EV badging. The cabin layout and features will be similar to the ICE-powered Safari, with the addition of a few EV-specific software features and updates.
Tata Motors has started testing the Avinya electric SUV ahead of its official debut in 2027. Spy shots suggest that the production-ready model is likely to stay largely true to the concept. The test mule features a closed-off grille, vertically stacked lighting elements on the front bumper, slim DRLs (daytime running lights), large aero-optimized alloy wheels, flush-fitting door handles, a sloping roofline, thick body cladding, and wraparound taillamps.
While the powertrain specifications are still under wraps, the Avinya is expected to offer battery pack options ranging between 65kWh – 80kWh. Reports suggest that the Tata Avinya will be built on the Freelander architecture, developed by the Chery-JLR joint venture. This platform supoorts an electrical architecture of up to 8000V and DC fast charging up to 350kW.
