Tata Avinya X will launch in India in 2027. The premium EV will use the Freelander platform from CJLR. Battery packs between 65 kWh and 80 kWh are expected.
Tata Motors has taken a major step in its premium electric vehicle journey. The company has reportedly revised the technology roadmap for its upcoming Avinya range, with the first production model, the Avinya X, now expected to launch in 2027.
One of the biggest changes is the platform strategy. Instead of using Jaguar Land Rover's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA), Tata will now build the Avinya X on the Freelander platform sourced from the Chery-JLR (CJLR) ecosystem. The move is expected to help Tata reduce development costs, speed up execution and bring its premium EVs to market faster.
The Avinya X, internally known as the P2 programme, will be the first production vehicle under Tata's new premium EV strategy.
Engineering prototypes are expected to be ready later this year, indicating that development work is progressing steadily. Reports suggest that Tata has reshuffled its original plans, with the Avinya X now taking priority over earlier product programmes.
The upcoming model is expected to play a key role in establishing Avinya as a premium electric vehicle brand rather than just a single model.

The biggest talking point is Tata's decision to move away from JLR's EMA platform.
Industry sources suggest that adapting the EMA architecture for the expected volumes and pricing of the Avinya lineup had become increasingly difficult from a business perspective. By shifting to the Freelander platform, Tata gains access to a proven EV architecture while focusing its efforts on localisation, software development and customer experience.
The change also reflects a growing trend in the global auto industry, where manufacturers are increasingly tapping into China's EV ecosystem for faster development cycles and advanced electric vehicle technology.
While the basic platform comes from the CJLR ecosystem, Tata is not simply rebadging an existing product.
The company is reportedly redesigning several electronic systems, software layers and vehicle functions to suit Indian customers and global market requirements. Teams from India, China and the UK are working together on the project.
This means the final product will still carry Tata's design philosophy and engineering approach while benefiting from a globally developed EV platform.
Battery strategy is also becoming clearer.
Industry sources indicate that the first Avinya models are likely to use battery packs ranging from 65 kWh to 80 kWh. The focus is expected to be on delivering a balance between driving range, performance and affordability.
While Tata Group's battery company Agratas remains central to the long-term EV roadmap, initial Avinya models could use battery solutions sourced from existing partners until local production reaches scale.

The Avinya X is only the beginning.
Tata Motors is reportedly evaluating a larger three-row premium electric SUV that could join the Avinya family after the launch of the Avinya X. The idea is to create a full premium EV lineup that competes across multiple segments.
This strategy would help Avinya evolve into a standalone premium electric brand with a broader product portfolio.
The first Avinya models are expected to be manufactured at the recently opened TMPV-JLR facility in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu.
The facility is expected to play a major role in Tata's premium EV plans and could also support future manufacturing synergies between Tata Motors and JLR.
Shared sourcing and production activities may help both companies achieve better economies of scale in the years ahead.
In an official statement, Tata Motors confirmed that the first Avinya vehicle will launch in India in 2027 and will use the Freelander platform produced by CJLR.
The company also reiterated that Avinya is being developed as a global premium EV brand that will leverage multiple scalable architectures while benefiting from the wider Tata Motors and JLR ecosystem.
With a new platform, a fresh development strategy and strong support from global partners, the Avinya X is shaping up to be one of Tata Motors' most important electric vehicle launches of the decade.
