Tata Motors is working on an all-new compact SUV, which will join the Nexon line-up in next couple of years. Codenamed Scarlet, the new SUV will be introduced as a lifestyle SUV. Not just Tata Motors, Mahindra is also developing an all-new compact SUV based on the Vision S concept. The Mahindra’s upcoming lifestyle SUV is reportedly to be the smallest member in the Scorpio family.
The new compact SUV will be marketed as a lifestyle SUV, but it will be a front-wheel-drive model. The SUV is reportedly to share its styling with the soon-to-be-launched Tata Sierra. It will be positioned between the Tata Nexon and the Tata Curvv. However, the new Scarlet will be a sub-4 meter SUV and will come as an alternative to the likes of the Mahindra Thar 3-door, Maruti Jimny and the upcoming Baby Mahindra Scorpio.
The new mini Sierra is likely to carry a boxy and upright design, which we have already seen on the soon-to-be-launched Tata Sierra. The design language will focus on a bold and upright front fascia, giving it a rugged and urban-ready appeal.
The new Tata Scarlet is likely to appeal to urban buyers looking for a compact yet lifestyle-oriented SUV. The new SUV will come with several high-end features such as a larger touchscreen infotainment unit, wireless connectivity, HUD, front and rear parking sensors, panoramic sunroof, LEVEL 2 ADAS and others.
The lifestyle won’t offer AWD or 4WD option, which keeps it more road-focused rather than a full-fledged off-roader like the Mahindra Thar or Maruti Jimny.
The Tata Scarlet is likely to share its engine lineup with the Nexon or Curvv. It is expected to get a 1.2L direct injection turbo petrol engine that produces 123bhp of power, and paired to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Additionally, Tata Motors is working on a new 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine. This engine will debut in the upcoming Tata Sierra, and will also power future Tata models including the Curvv and next-gen Nexon. The same engine could also be considered for the Scarlet in the future. In-line with Tata’s focus on EVs, the Scarlet is expected to get an electric version.
The Tata Scarlet lifestyle SUV is expected to be launched sometime in late 2026 or 2027. This front-wheel-drive SUV will have a rugged styling, and will offer a long list of comfort and convenience features. It is expected to carry a price tag of around Rs 8 lakh to Rs 14 lakh.
