Skoda has confirmed plans to introduce its first locally manufactured electric car in India between April 2027 and March 2028. This launch comes as part of Skoda's long-term strategy to tap into the growing Indian EV market, which is gradually evolving with improved infrastructure and rising demand for electric mobility.

While Skoda already offers several electric models internationally, including the Enyaq, the company has taken a more cautious approach in India. According to Ashish Gupta, the Brand Director of Skoda India, the company is waiting for the right time to introduce its first locally produced EV. The company plans to wait until there is better charging infrastructure and a more developed market for EVs in India.
Skoda’s first electric car for India will be designed specifically for the Indian market. It will be built on a platform tailored to local needs, including a suitable size and range for Indian customers. The car is expected to measure about 4.5 meters in length, making it ideal for Indian roads.
To appeal to a broader customer base, Skoda plans to offer two different battery pack options for the India-made EV. One will be aimed at budget-conscious customers who primarily drive in urban areas, while the other will provide a longer range for those who frequently drive longer distances. This will help Skoda cater to both city drivers and those seeking a more extended driving range.
Skoda has already started testing its global electric models in India. The company began testing the pre-facelift Enyaq in 2022 and showcased it at the Bharat Mobility Expo in 2024. Skoda plans to bring the Enyaq and possibly other global EV models to India as low-volume imports by 2025. However, the company’s focus remains on producing EVs locally, which will make them more accessible to Indian buyers.
Despite the challenges posed by competition and policy uncertainties, Skoda’s parent company, Volkswagen Group, remains committed to the Indian market. The group has approved an additional €1 billion investment for its India 3.0 project, which will include new electric and ICE models designed for Indian customers.
