Skoda Is Considering CNG For Its Popular 1.0 Turbo Engine

Skoda is considering CNG for its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. The Kylaq is the priority for a possible CNG version. Kushaq and Slavia could also get the CNG powertrain.

Skoda is considering adding a CNG option to its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine in India. The engine currently powers the Kylaq, Kushaq and Slavia, and the company says all three models could be considered for CNG. The Kylaq is currently the main focus for Skoda as it looks to add more powertrain options to its India lineup.

Skoda looking at CNG for its 1.0 turbo engine

Skoda India brand director Ashish Gupta has said that the company is evaluating CNG for its 1.0-litre engine. Since the Kylaq, Kushaq and Slavia use the same engine and MQB A0-IN platform, all three models are technically open to getting the CNG option. There is no confirmation yet on which models will get CNG or when they could be launched. The 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine currently produces 115hp and 178Nm. It is offered with both manual and automatic gearboxes.

Kylaq is the priority

Skoda is first looking at the Kylaq for its CNG plans. The compact SUV is sold in a segment where CNG options are already available from several manufacturers. The company is also looking at CNG because of changing customer preferences around petrol and the wider discussions around fuel choices in India. Adding CNG could give Skoda another option for buyers who want lower running costs.

CNG version could have lower performance

Skoda is also looking at how much performance it can retain with CNG. The company expects some drop in performance compared with the petrol version. According to Ashish Gupta, customers may be comfortable with a 10-15 percent drop in performance. The current 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine makes 115hp and 178Nm. Skoda will have to balance performance, fuel efficiency and CNG running costs if it decides to bring the engine to market with CNG.

Skoda sees CNG potential in premium cars

Skoda also believes CNG is not limited to budget cars. The company feels that some buyers of more expensive cars may also choose CNG if the fuel savings make sense. This could allow Skoda to offer CNG models at a higher price than the usual CNG cars in the market.

Kylaq CNG will compete with Brezza and Nexon

The Kylaq competes with the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite. Several models in this segment are already available with CNG. The Tata Nexon is currently the only compact SUV in this segment to offer a CNG powertrain with a turbo-petrol engine.

If the Kushaq gets CNG, it will compete with CNG versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Maruti Suzuki Victoris. The Slavia could have a different advantage. There is currently no CNG-powered car in the midsize sedan segment, so a CNG Slavia could be the only model of its kind.

Skoda CNG models could cost more

The Skoda Kylaq is currently priced from Rs 7.59 lakh to Rs 12.99 lakh, while the Kushaq is priced from Rs 10.69 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh. The prices of the Slavia facelift have not been announced yet. If Skoda introduces CNG versions, they are expected to cost more than the petrol variants. However, the company has not announced any pricing or launch details yet.

For now, Skoda is still evaluating the CNG option. If the plan gets the green light, the Kylaq is likely to be the first model to get the 1.0-litre turbo-CNG engine, while the Kushaq and Slavia could follow later.
