New Hyundai Tucson for India Could Bring Hybrid Power

New Hyundai Tucson could get hybrid power if it comes to India. The fifth-generation SUV gets a bigger body and a completely redesigned cabin. An updated 1.6-litre hybrid is expected to be one of its key global powertrains.

Hyundai has introduced the all-new fifth-generation Tucson in South Korea, and the new SUV could eventually make its way to India with a major change under the bonnet. The 2027 Tucson gets a completely new design, a larger body and a heavily redesigned cabin, while an updated hybrid powertrain is expected to be one of its key global options.

Hyundai has not yet confirmed the India launch of the new Tucson. However, if the SUV returns to India, the addition of hybrid technology could make it a more attractive alternative to conventional petrol-powered premium SUVs.

New Tucson Gets a Boxy Design

The new-generation Tucson marks a major departure from the styling of the outgoing model. Hyundai's latest ‘Art of Steel’ design philosophy gives the SUV a much more upright and squared-off appearance. The front features a wide horizontal LED light bar with vertically positioned lighting elements at either end. The bonnet is flatter and sits higher, while the bumper gets a layered design with a large lower air intake and silver accents. The side profile gets squared wheel arches, prominent cladding and sharper body panels. At the rear, the SUV features a full-width LED light bar connecting the vertical tail-lamps, along with ‘TUCSON’ lettering across the tailgate.

2027 Tucson Is Bigger

Hyundai has also increased the dimensions of the new Tucson. The SUV measures 4,700mm in length, 1,905mm in width and 1,685mm in height, with a 2,785mm wheelbase. Compared to its predecessor, the new Tucson is 60mm longer and 40mm wider, while the wheelbase has increased by 30mm. The larger footprint should improve passenger space. Hyundai says second-row headroom has increased by 29mm, while the rear doors can open up to 83 degrees, making entry and exit easier.

New Cabin Gets More Technology

The interior has been completely redesigned as well. The new Tucson gets a large portrait-oriented central touchscreen running Hyundai's latest Pleos infotainment system. A slim digital display sits ahead of the driver, while the two-spoke steering wheel gets a squared design. The floating centre console also creates additional storage space underneath. The dashboard follows a clean horizontal layout with ambient lighting. Dual wireless smartphone charging is among the features confirmed for the Korean market.

Hybrid Power Could Be the Big Change

Hyundai has not yet announced the complete powertrain lineup for the fifth-generation Tucson. However, an updated version of the brand's 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain is expected to be one of the major options globally. Petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains could also continue in selected markets. If Hyundai decides to bring the new Tucson to India, the hybrid version could be particularly important. Strong-hybrid technology would allow the SUV to offer improved efficiency in city conditions while retaining the convenience of a petrol engine for longer journeys. This could also fit into Hyundai India's broader move towards hybrid technology as automakers look for alternatives to conventional petrol and diesel powertrains.

What Could the India-Spec Tucson Get?

Hyundai has not confirmed the India-spec powertrain or equipment list yet. The company could potentially tailor the SUV for the Indian market, including its engine, transmission and feature package. The new Tucson's larger dimensions, redesigned cabin and modern technology would also give it a stronger premium appeal. If hybrid technology is introduced, it could become one of the key differentiators for the SUV in India.

Could It Influence the Next-Gen Creta?

The new Tucson also offers an indication of where Hyundai's SUV design language is heading. Its upright proportions, squared wheel arches and horizontal lighting elements could influence future Hyundai SUVs. The next-generation Creta is expected to arrive in India in 2027. While it will have its own design identity, some of the styling cues from the Tucson could eventually filter down to the smaller SUV.

Hyundai Tucson India Launch

Hyundai has not officially confirmed when or whether the fifth-generation Tucson will be launched in India. The previous-generation model was sold here with petrol and diesel engines, but the new model's potential hybrid technology could mark a significant shift.
