New Hyundai Tucson to Get Hybrid and PHEV Options: Details

Hyundai is preparing the fifth-generation Tucson, which is expected to bring a major change in design, technology and powertrain options. The new SUV will move away from the rounded styling of the current model and adopt Hyundai’s new ‘Art of Steel’ design language.

The next-generation Tucson is expected to make its global debut later this year, followed by its India launch in 2027. One of the biggest changes will be the introduction of strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains, while the current diesel engine is likely to be dropped.

Sharper and More Upright Design

The new Hyundai Tucson will have a much sharper design than the outgoing model. The SUV is expected to feature a tall front fascia, clamshell bonnet and sharper body lines.

The front could get vertically positioned LED daytime running lights connected by a slim LED strip, creating an H-shaped lighting signature. The overall design is expected to take inspiration from newer Hyundai SUVs such as the Santa Fe and Palisade.

The changes will continue along the sides, with squared-off wheel arches, new alloy wheels, fresh body cladding and redesigned dual-tone ORVMs. A flatter roof profile and sharper panels are also expected to give the SUV a more upright stance.

17-Inch Touchscreen for the New Tucson

The cabin will also receive a major technology upgrade. Hyundai is expected to introduce its Pleos software and hardware system, which will bring a large 17-inch central touchscreen.

The screen is expected to use an Android-based operating system and control several vehicle functions. A smaller 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster could sit behind the steering wheel and display information such as speed and navigation.

Despite the larger screens, Hyundai is expected to retain physical buttons and rotary controls for important functions such as air conditioning and audio.

Gleo AI Assistant and Level 2.5 ADAS

The new Tucson could also feature Hyundai's Gleo AI assistant. It is expected to understand natural language commands, allowing drivers to operate certain functions without manually navigating through menus.

The SUV is also expected to get Level 2.5 driver assistance technology, which would bring more advanced safety and semi-autonomous driving features to the Tucson.

Strong Hybrid and PHEV Powertrains

Hybrid technology will be one of the biggest highlights of the new Tucson. Hyundai is expected to offer both a strong hybrid and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version.

The powertrains are expected to use Hyundai’s next-generation TMED-II Hybrid architecture. The strong hybrid could pair a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack.

The PHEV version is expected to feature a larger battery and a more powerful electric motor. It could offer an electric-only driving range of around 100 km, making it suitable for short daily commutes without using the petrol engine.

Tucson N Could Produce Over 300 HP

Hyundai is also reportedly considering a performance-focused Tucson N variant. If introduced, it could use a turbo-hybrid powertrain producing more than 300 hp. An all-wheel-drive system could also be offered, giving the performance SUV stronger acceleration and better traction.

For India, the current 2.0-litre diesel engine is likely to be discontinued as Hyundai shifts its focus towards hybrid and electrified powertrains.

Rugged Tucson XRT Pro Also Expected

The new Tucson could also be offered in an XRT Pro variant aimed at buyers looking for a more rugged SUV.

Earlier test vehicles have reportedly shown features such as increased ground clearance, raised suspension, red tow hooks, stronger roof rails and Continental CrossContact all-terrain tyres.

This version could give the Tucson a more off-road-focused character compared with the standard model.

New Hyundai Tucson India Launch

The fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson is expected to make its global debut later this year, with the India launch likely in 2027.

With its new boxier design, 17-inch touchscreen, advanced driver assistance features and hybrid powertrain options, the upcoming Tucson is shaping up to be a significant upgrade over the current model. The addition of a PHEV could also make it an interesting option for buyers who want electric driving capability without giving up the convenience of a petrol engine.
