Skoda cars India is planning to relaunch the current-gen Superb sedan in the Indian market. Earlier this year, the brand’s flagship sedan was discontinued in India due to the implementation of the new BS6 Phase II emission norms. Now, according to the latest reports, the Skoda Superb will be making its way back to India in limited numbers as a CBU unit. We take a closer look.
Previously, the Super was locally assembled in Skoda’s Indian production facility. However, the automaker will now be bringing the sedan as a CBU (completely built unit) import. As it will be sold in limited numbers, the Superb will qualify for the government’s GSR 870 rule which allows automakers to import a total of 2,500 units of any right-hand-drive vehicle falling under M and L category, without any homologation requirement.
The current-gen Superb is nearing the end of its lifespan, with an all-new model set to be introduced later this year. Skoda’s relaunch of the Superb is a stop-gap measure till the new one is launched. The automaker has already released official images of the next-gen Superb’s interior and features as well.
With the relaunched Superb, it will become the first Skoda model in India to get ADAS features like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, park assist, and a 360-degree camera. The Superb will be offered in a single, fully-loaded L&K trim. There will be three exterior colour options - Rossi Brunello, Water World Green, and Magic Black. Other feature highlights include a new Columbus Infotainment system, adaptive chassis control, active tyre pressure monitoring, nine airbags, and 17-inch alloy wheels from Stratos.
Skoda will offer the Superb with an updated 2-litre TSI turbo-petrol motor that makes 190 bhp with 320 Nm of peak torque. It will be mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
While Skoda is yet to reveal the Superb’s prices, expect it to be somewhere around the Rs 50 lakh mark due to it now being a fully imported model. Latest reports suggest that some dealers have started accepting bookings for the sedan as well.
