Japanese automaker, Suzuki has recently revealed the Vitara electric SUV in the global markets. The electric SUV is basically the production version of the eVX concept that debuted at the 2023 Auto Expo. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara EV is scheduled to make India debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025 with launch expected by March.
At the time of unveiling, Suzuki did not reveal details about the range of the e Vitara. According to the Autoexpress, the new Vitara EV will offer a range of up to 247 miles (approx. 400km) that's lower than most of its direct rivals including Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq - both offering a range of more than 370 miles (595km). The entry-level model with a smaller battery pack is likely to offer a range of around 200 miles (approx. 322km) in a single charge.
The e Vitara is based on a newly developed, EV-only platform called 'HEARTECT-e' that is jointly developed by Suzuki, Toyota and Daihatsu. In fact, Toyota's version of the e Vitara is also scheduled to be launched in our market in 2025. It was showcased as the Urban SUV Concept. The new electric Vitara will be offered with two battery sizes - 49kWh and 61kWh.
The entry-level model is packed with a 49kWh battery pack and a front-mounted electric motor rated at 142bhp and 189Nm of torque. The mid-spec models get the larger 61kWh battery and a 172bhp, front-axle mounted electric motor. On the other hand, the top-spec model comes with the same 61kWh battery pack with two electric motors - one on each axle. The combined power and torque output stands at 181bhp and 300Nm, respectively.
The new e Vitara comes with Suzuki's new AllGrip-e system that is claimed to offer "powerful performance". It also get a Trail mode for rough terrain and slippery conditions. This system applies brake on spinning wheels and sends torque to opposite wheel for better traction. Driver can opt for a stronger regenerative braking mode using a button on the centre console. Three drive modes are available - Normal, Eco and Sport.
Measuring 4,275mm in length, the Suzuki e Vitara rides on a 2700mm long wheelbase. It has 200mm longer wheelbase compared to the global Vitara, offering more space inside the cabin. It is wider and taller than the sibling SUV. The entry-level variant weighs at 1,702kg, while the top-spec dual-motor model weighs 1,900kg.
In terms of features, the electric SUV gets a 10.25-inch digital driver's display, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen display, climate control, rotary gear selector, a wireless charging pad, and others. It is claimed to offer a boot space of 306-litres, which can be further extended by folding the second-row seats.
