Tata Motors, which holds over half of the Indian EV (electric vehicle) market share, has ambitious plans to further strengthen its business. The indigenous automaker aims to play some of its major cards in the electric SUV segment while expanding its ICE product portfolio by the end of next year. In 2025, the company will introduce at least six major products, including petrol versions of the Harrier and Safari SUVs, the Sierra petrol, and three EVs.
Let’s take a look at the key details of the upcoming Tata SUVs/EVs.
A while ago, test mules of the Tata Harrier and Safari petrol models were spotted during testing in India. Both SUVs are expected to hit showrooms in 2025. Powering these vehicles will be Tata’s 1.5L, 4-cylinder TGDi petrol engine, delivering 170bhp at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm and 3,500rpm. This direct-injection motor is BS6 2.0-compliant and compatible with a 20% petrol-ethanol (E20) fuel blend.
With its all-aluminium construction, the 1.5L engine is lightweight, enhancing both power and fuel efficiency. The same engine will also power the upcoming Sierra SUV, set to launch in 2025. Prices for the Harrier and Safari petrol models are expected to be lower than their diesel counterparts.
The Harrier and Safari SUVs will receive their electric iterations next year. Both EVs are likely to stay true to their concepts, retaining most design elements and interior features. Tata Motors might showcase their final production models at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025.
The Tata Harrier EV and Safari EV will be built on the brand’s new Acti.ev platform, which boasts 10% better energy density. This architecture is designed to deliver a range of 300km to 600km, with an optimized battery pack that uses cells meeting advanced global standards. Both EVs will feature a flat floor and support V2L (vehicle-to-load) and V2V (vehicle-to-vehicle) charging.
Tata might equip the Harrier and Safari EVs with a 60kWh battery pack and dual electric motors. Reports suggest that the Harrier EV will offer an AWD/4x4 drivetrain option.
Initially, the Tata Sierra will be offered with a petrol engine only. It will feature the 1.5L TGDi petrol engine, producing 170bhp and 280Nm of torque. This four-cylinder engine incorporates advanced technologies such as a cooled variable geometry turbocharger, an integrated exhaust manifold, dual cam phasing, a timing chain, a variable oil pump, a maintenance-free valve train, and an advanced
exhaust system.
Unlike its three-door concept, the production model will adopt a five-door configuration. The design is expected to retain several elements from the concept, including an upright nose, a wide grille, headlamps with a split setup, an LED light bar at the top of the nose, and a flat bonnet blending into the light bar. Additional design features such as body cladding, bold shoulder creases, and a uniquely designed B-pillar will enhance its rugged appearance.
Tata Motors has confirmed that the Altroz EV will launch in 2025. The electric hatchback was first showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and later at the 2020 Auto Expo in a near-production version. However, its market debut was delayed due to development challenges.
Similar to the Tata Punch EV, the Altroz EV will be based on the Acti.ev architecture. It will house a battery pack under the floor, which will reduce ground clearance by approximately 20mm. The Altroz EV might share its powertrains with the Punch EV, which offers 25kWh and 35kWh battery options.
The smaller battery delivers a claimed range of 315km on the MIDC cycle, while the larger one promises a range of 421km on a single charge. A few EV-specific changes will be made to differentiate it from the ICE-powered Altroz.
